Shipping PS5 (7KG Box) from Australia → USA

I'm kindly looking for experiences of those of us who have sent bulky items (7KG) to the US.

Backstory: A really good mate who lives there recently recovered from the rona so a group of us chipped in and bought him a PS5 and planning to send it to him. Now i'm looking for the best way to send a 7KG shipping box from Australia -> USA (Didn't realise how bulky the box is!), insurance and tracking are important as I realise there may be delays with the current situation over there.

1- Should we open the device to make it look used so to avoid him paying taxes or it shouldn't matter? We are marking it as gift on the box.

2- I am trying to estimate the cost of shipping and so far managed to get these quotes online:

  • eParcel - Standard pack & Track Insured) - $114
Express MERCH ECI Insured - $122

  • DHL - $350

  • Australia Post - Unable to get quote online, apparently the standard shipping box is above the girth limit?

For reference the packed complete shipping box size is 50x44x35cm. USA Zipcode is 60108

Would really appreciate help and sharing experiences, thanks so much in advance.

What zip code in the USA?

wouldn't it be easier just to nbuy from a a US seller and ship it directly to him??

Well, they've already bought the PS.

    • We already bought it over here, apparently it's still hard to get over there.

    • How easy is it to get stock in the US?

Also, you'll need to take into account that shipping would take probably close to 2 months. Sent a late birthday present to family member in California at the end of December, arrived there last week

    • If you use a courier you can get it there in a week.
I send stuff to us regularly.

The $114-$122 postage rate is very good for a 7kg item. As it's a present it's best not to do anything with the box at all, just ship as is. Beside anything less than $2k doesn't attract any import or duty anyway.

Sell the one you've already bought here
    - make a fortune in profit
    - then transfer the cash to his bank and let him buy one over there…

Next post; “I want to send $1500 to a US bank account, what’s the best option to minimise fees?”

      • Then it will be asking why he sent 1500au and it wasnt 1500us when it got there

      • Haha I assume Transferwise would be the best option ;)

I would take it out of the box then repack in a smaller box, specifically one that doesn't advertise itself as a PS5.

Less likely to get stolen by post staff.

    • Thanks done that, I really appreciate the tip!

I was able to snag an Xbox series X in the US from Walmart, however it was a huge pita. Other stores you could try are best buy, Amazon and target, if you decide to go that route.

Don't forget insurance in case of damage or loss. Many have gone 'missing'.

Won't there be issues with the different power voltages ?

These days power adapter will work 110-240v thus will work worldwide - still need to check the actual power adapter though to be sure.

Thanks for the suggestions, ended up going with Australia post eParcel (one of our mates has a business ABN so gets slightly better rates than standard Australia Post) so $124 promising 7-15 delivery days with tracking/signature/insurance.

I assume it will take a bit longer but fingers crossed it all goes smoothly, thanks again everyone!
