[Resolved] Sony Cashback WARNING - Not Worth It. 3 Months Later and Still Not Paid

Posting to see if anyone is in the same boat and to bring to light on how bad these cashback systems are processed.

I bought 3 Sony Lenses on 5th November 2020 which was advertising up to $300 cashback on each lens, up to 3 lens.

In total my cashback was advertised as $450 for the 3 lens I purchased.

I submitted my claim on their website on 11th November and got confirmation via email and my claim number in this promo was number 52, so quiet an early claim number.

I sent all receipts and photos in detail to them on the 11th.

I followed them up on the 3rd December and they replied on the 4th December

"Please note that your claim is currently pending as you have not supplied a legible image of the serial number plate attached to either the side or base of your SEL100400GM.
Please supply the required documentation as soon as possible so we can promptly review and validate your claim."

So I retook photos of that lens, this time a lot more and replied an hour later.

On the 24th December I got cashback approval with "Please look out for an email from [email protected] over the next two weeks outlining the steps you need to take to securely provide your bank account details so the EFT can be processed."

With no email I followed up on January 16, and January 20th.

On January 22 I called the claims line which took 15 minutes and got a "escalation number" that I have not received a email to provide bank account to get my cashback.

On January 27 I received a login to finally provide my bank details and I completed it the same day.

It is now 11th February, and my login for the claim still shows " VALID - PAYMENT REQUESTED - Your cash back is queued for processing"

3 Months and still no cashback. Sigh.

  • Was there anything in the promotion T&C's about how long the cashback process could take?

If it's anything like the Samsung SSD cashback promos, you can expect a month or a bit longer from the moment cashback is validated to until the money in your account

    • Hah! Samsung.

      8 Oct - Claim submitted
      12 Oct - Claim validated

3 Dec - Claim paid. 52 days after it was approved.

T&Cs say "up to 60 days" but yeesh, its almost like they delay paying out on purpose. Either that or cashbacks are funded by shipping containers of won sent by sea freight straight from Korea.

      • Counter example from my experience with Samsung SSD promotions:

        Example 1:
        May 11 - Submitted
May 13 - Ask for more information (another serial number)
        May 21 - Approved
        May 30 - Processed

        Example 2:
        Jan 10 - Submitted
        Jan 31 - Approved
        Feb 22 - Processed

        Pretty quick in my experience.

      • T&Cs say "up to 60 days" but yeesh, its almost like they delay paying out on purpose.

I heard some places do automatically set up payment that way, as they get interest for as long as its in their bank account.

  • T&C for latest promo on cameras is here
    https://promo.sonyanz.com/redemptions/sony-australia-bonus-c…

All I could find regard to timing is

"Following confirmation of claim approval, the cashback will be awarded in the form of a payment made by an authorised third party via electronic funds transfer to the claimant’s nominated Australian bank account within 2 weeks of the claimant supplying the required bank account details."

So in theory, they are currently 1 day later on their T&C for my payment

OP - when you say 'Not Worth It' does that mean you wouldn't have bought the Sony product or wouldn't have bothered with the cashback?

My last cashback too some time too and in the end I didn't mind because I got the money back and was happy with the product.

Yes, next time if i see a deal I will not be counting the cashback as the price, because IMO, 10 emails and a 15 minute phone call and me having to chase them is not worth it.

Imagine if I did not chase them and keep on top of it? They probably just say oh its outside of the promo period now, backluck.

I wonder how many people they get with these tactics, and I will not play their game no longer.

Poor little precious. Life is a struggle.

I thought it was well known that the cashback and "bonus" redemption promotions can take forever. The programs are often outsourced to a third party company to deal with.

The quickest one I've ever received was from Breville in just under two weeks.

Trash back. So many hoops to jump through to make sure it works.

  • I'm nearly at 5 months waiting for a Liquorland cashback. All documents submitted and accepted by Cashback but they're saying that they are waiting for Liquorland to get back to them.

I'm surprised so many people get upset by the cashback… its like they are relying on it or they'll die.
Theres at least 1 post a day about some cashback not worth it etc

You don't understand… OP had to wait. Like days and stuff.

For many people, a cashback offer is often the trigger for the purchase in the first place…ie. the purchase wouldn't have been made had there been no cashback.
