Australia Hotel lists- Best/Worse experience for Covid Cancellation Policies.

I'm just trying to compile a list so I know which hotels to avoid pretty much for my next travels plans in Australia as some hotel just want to cash in on the situation are are not humane at all. As even free cancellation is not a guarantee anymore, as looks like you need to have free cancellation on the day of arrival with those Snap Lockdown that Dan Andrew just announced.

Example:

Booking Platform: Agoda
Reason for cancellation: Due to the border closure I could not go to my planned Gold Coast trip

Best booking experience:
- Vibe Hotel Gold Coast (Offered full refund even though our Hotel was booked with a non-refundable policy )

Worse booking experience:
- Novotel Sunshine Cost Resort (Only wanted us to only reschedule)

There are plenty of review sites out there.

    • Should we try to compile a list?

during covid i only book through the hotel and only those that a fully flex (cancel on the day even)

peace of mind and save calling and chasing up while saving some money
    just not worth it

    • Any examples of full flex hotels? Does that mean a refund, or a credit with their hotel chain?

      • If you're concerned about things happening as late as the day of departure, capslock's suggestion to book the first night separately is a good one.

I never book directly through hotels as you can get lower prices via coupons, and I've had zero issues with cancellations through Expedia and its brands (where the property has a free cancellation policy). Refunds to credit card are processed automatically within a couple of business days.

Dealing directly with hotels may be ok, but I wouldn't be surprised if some hotels (like some airlines) drag their heels on refunds, or even fight it and only offer credit instead.

If your worst experience was the opportunity to reschedule, you have probably done ok.

    • I'm from Melbourne, so going to Gold Coast is hard to plan again with lockdown happening every week. But learnt my lesson now, don't plan anything apart from Victoria.

My suggestion is to only book hotels offering free cancellation with 24 hours notice or less. Book the first night separately.

If you are really unlucky and a lockdown is announced on the first day of your trip then you only lose one night's accommodation. The rest of your accommodation after the first night should be fully refundable.

    • That's a very good idea!
