How Can You Use Year 11 Marks for HSC?

It seems like last year's class got many special provisions to mitigate the impact of Covid-19 including receiving offers based on year 11 marks. It seems these provisions have died down for this year's cohort as everyone is at ease with the pandemic now.

Does this mean that this year's cohort will get hit harder as there is nothing to cushion them? How would one use their year 11 marks, when their year 11 marks were the very ones during Covid. Both their senior years will be affected by Covid. The year of 2021 class seems to be the year that's going to get it harder than class of 2020

  • There is a thing called scaling. It happens every year and is applied to the HSC and uni results so the results can be compared from one year to another.

    • I think 2020 and 2021 have to be looked at for what each were (or will be).

I don't think that 2020 Students got a free kick. The position on 2021 students will be revised and updated as the position develops.

If a student didn't pass in 2020, and wanted to repeat in 2021, they might need to look at individual circumstances for a solution that works.

I actually think it will go against them when employers look at what went on and results etc

        • Well, employers could miss out on some real talent if they go with a no 2020 HSC leavers employed (even if unwritten/unsaid), some of which may include friends of their own children (same age etc) and their children if seeking work.

I agree, it is totally hard with the Job Market as well.

Expecting students to repeat or extend their HSC into 2021 probably wouldn't be fair though.

we will have some of the smartest unemployed in the world after all this virus crap

Agree.. I dont think anyone would be asking them to do this.. But some may take it on.

The HSC is a joke. It is designed so that those with privilege get to steal marks from better students in the final exams by allocating them in order of how the school ranked you (rather than your actual measured performance across the state). Which means if you're favourites of the teachers you will do better even if your actual measured performance is poor.

    • Well, I'm not sure where you got that from. They system is far more complicated and I'm pretty sure does not include "picking" students

You are an idiot. The internal component is based on how well you did in the HSC trial, run by the school. These trials are blinded with no names placed on papers. So unless the teacher in a 220 student school recognises your writing, I doubt there will be any favouritism. The only subjects that are not blinded are some hands on ones, but they would only have 2-3 students in them anyway.

I hear this a lot from people who (profanity) up the HSC lol. Are you one of those?

Well…. the 2021 year so far has all been held onsite. I see you're in NSW, so you won't get the 3 days off home schooling. that VIC is about to get. Nor would you have had the 2 terms of home schooling last year like VIC.

Does this mean that this year's cohort will get hit harder as there is nothing to cushion them?

Not sure what your issue is that needs 'cushioning'? You go to school, you learn. You get good marks, you get a good placement.

ATAR is a rank so if everyone is affected by covid it shouldn't really matter… The person that get's the highest ATAR doesn't necessarily answer everything perfectly, they just do better than the rest of their cohort. It's the same as if there is a hard test, you just have to do better than the rest.

  • all these things - especially your scores and grades - are really not as important as they feel to you right now

in a few years it won't matter to you or anyone else anymore

if you are feeling stressed, anxious, fearful - definitly consider seeking some counciling with a psychologist/s

    you'll get through this

just do your best and you will be fine

  • Welcome to the reality of life kid. Some people got a mortgage and job holiday for 12 months during COVID while those of us who saved or lived carefully had to do it on our own.
