How to Repair Minor Rust on Car? Nothing Major

Hi

i m looking after something which can help me repair or clean few spot of rust around my car. (look like what s on the pics)
It s nothing major, it s probably coming from gravel when driving

I saw few videos on youtube about different brand and type of stuff i can use for this.

Like to know if one of you are using anything who actually works ?

  • Have you or your car lived near the ocean or driven through creeks or rivers?

  • +2

You've got to sand it right back to bare metal due to the rust. Next you need to spray primer, then spray colour then a clear coat. Those rust spots near and under the windscreen rubber could be bad, they can rust through and cause a leak.

At least it's a white car which is pretty easy to work on.

You won't get it perfect but you might get it passable.

Check out this video from Supercheap Auto, it explains the process and shows the kind of products you need. Have fun!

    • thanks, i will check this video.
It s doesnt look bad now but it s many of them and very tiny,
I woud prefer to fix it before it s getting worst

I m just afraid it wont look great after a repaint all of them, as it s a bit everywhere.

      • Yeah it might not come out great, but should be better than rust spots.

There is another method you can use where you sand each individual rust spot with sand paper stuck on the end of a pencil, then you dab touch up paint. Really, the proper method is sanding that entire area down and then spraying and blending it but you might get away with doing the spot method.

I'll find a couple of videos for you.

These are both great videos on rust spot repairs.

  • the actual photo i uploaded it s not actually mine, but i got like 30 smalls spot around my car but all different area … so it s hard to decide if it s good idea to sand them all.

also i check this video :

does that really works, IRON X ?

  • The roof looks like a combination of chips and environmental contamination. Wash car, dry car then remove the rust that hasn't penetrated the paint with a clay bar.

For the rust that has penetrated the paint on the roof, you could get away with a 2 in 1 rust converter and sealer. If this is a flat paint (not metallic or sparkly) and an old car, you could cover just the work with a cheaper white paint then finish/blend with a few colour coded coats.

Follow other's advice for the bumper. I haven't played with rust that big for 15 years.

  • What sort of car? How much life left in it?

If it’s the little specs of surface rust and your car isn’t worth much just leave it. If you want to fix it, just rub it smooth and undercoat the top coat.

If it’s bubbling like the pic near the rear wheel it’s more of a concern. youll need to cut it out and fill it or patch it in some way before smoothing and painting. That’s harder than just smooth and paint, but is achievable DIY with some work

It will be difficult to get a good paint match.

Watch a few more video clips and give it a crack.

  • On the first one you're better of remove the bumper and see is there any rust on the inside, make sure no rust on both side or it will keep coming back. on the second one you can try 'iron x' or 'Meguiar’s Ultimate All Wheel Cleaner', then use something like 'Dupli-Color Scratch Fix All-In-1 Touch Up Paint' to touch up the paint and clear coat.

  • thanks everyone, i will try to fix it this week
