Where Do You Buy Your Clothes from? I'm Quite Picky

I don't like shopping at Kmart/Target/DFO etc, because I believe the quality of those clothes are terrible. Hyper thin, sometimes uncomfortable, potentially tear, and wear out pretty quickly.

I'm looking for clothes that are good quality. I'm happy to pay a premium on that. I'm also not a super fashionable guy and since I'm not trying to book any modelling gigs, the clothes have to just look 'fine'. I guess I like Rodd & Gunn, that kind of thing. You know, nicer material, breathes easily, and so on.

Here's the other thing. I really don't like logos or branding. My friend has a going out shirt, I know it because he wears that shirt every time he goes out. It's a polo shirt, but the logo is literally 20cm big. Not attacking anyone, I just think it's very tacky. I don't want a picture of a dog on my nipple, or a chap playing polo, or a crocodile, and so on. I don't like that kind of commercialism. Don't get me wrong, I understand why they do it, it's just that I don't want to be walking around with someone's logo on my chest like a human billboard.

So, can anyone recommend me somewhere that has?

  • Good value (we're on OzBargain after all)
  • Good quality
  • No visible branding

Polos, t-shirts, chinos, shorts - doesn't have to be all in the same place.

For business shirts, I use ct-shirts which I really like. Although they don't come with a front pocket which is very frustrating!

Thanks, everyone!

Industry, country road, Uniqlo, Saba, MJ Bale, Peter Jackson.

Since the pandemic and lots of WFH, I've bought a fair bit of underarmor, muscle nation and addidas activewear.

I'm usually a Uniqlo basics person but I had a run where about 4 pants failed disastrously in public so I'm switching back to Industry.

  • H&M

  • YD @ dfo.

  • I used to have your problem until I shopped at Uniqlo. Game changer.

  • Man I envy all you guys that have choices. I am tall with broad shoulders so almost nothing off the rack fits. Usually have to order from the USA to get proper tall sizes. Mostly buy Ralph Lauren and Columbia at premium as they fit. Wish I could buy cheap locally.

  • Salvation army (or any other thrift store).. opportunity to pick up any brand (randomly) usually under $10 and sometimes brand new with tags..

Obviously you would have to love the treasure hunt and not need everything laid out in brand order for you :)

    • I agree, depends on the branch though. Coogee has the best one ;)

  • Marks & Spencer online.

Prices in AUD, free delivery, free returns, decent prices - especially when on sale.

What I really like is their consistent sizing, so if I buy something, generally, I know it will fit.

  • Recently got into CUTS (clothing company) for staples (shirts, long sleeve, sweatshirts) thats all they do. A bit exy but after discount code it is about 50$ a Tshirt but the fit and material is great. I have been so happy with it that I am slowly phasing all my staple tshirts to them now.

  • I have to wear only with printed tags at the top inner back due to allergy. Not many brands make it. If the tags are printed I don't care brand and quality.

    • So the tag stops your allergy? How about clothes with no tags? Uniqlo have the tags in the bottom left side, does that help?

      • The tag causes allergy so I prefer to printed tag. If it is stitched in other parts it is OK because it does not touch my skin. Actually I cannot wear any watch or ring.

I guess I like Rodd & Gunn, that kind of thing.

I guess everyone missed this bit.

I guess I'll regret this so hopefully you are not my size. But I find shopping MJ Bale on sale (and with cash back, and they have a QFF program) pretty great value. At their on sale price I find their quality excellent particularly with jumpers/shirts etc.

Other than that, French Connection and Marcs can be great value on sale. 2020 has been great for buying stuff from their online stores due to covid. See how we go going forward. You have to quick with the last two, the stuff that is less seasonal and more versatile sell out quick. I find ASOS and The Iconic and Myer good places to find leather style shoes cheap on run out prices. Good luck!

Jeans: this is harder, find a cheap brand that doesn't look garish and that goes on sale. I still gravitate back to Levi's via their site (but mostly Myer) when they are discounted to $50-60 a pair. I'm trying to find a smaller brand I really love but can get quality jeans @ $80-90 consistently. Don't mind paying more for something I love. However it has been hard. Comoditi jeans are sold online by some guys in NSW, and have been OK (but barely go on sale under $100) but the fit might not suit. Good lightweight jeans though.

  • It might have more branding on it than you're after - but I highly recommend Patagonia 'Responsibili-tee' T-shirts… they're thick, a lot of it (all?) made from recycled materials and they wash over, and over again without losing shape. I've got a couple that I would wear weekly and are only starting to show signs of age after a couple of years now.

    • Sure you do, spammer.

    • In other words, you're promoting your own website. How dumb do you think we are?
