New but Old

Hi,

I'm not so new, I joined Ozbargain in 2007 and at that time there was about 100 members.

I'm a mid 30s guy with an avg job and a family.

I've never been in the forum section before other than the highlighted topics - which I've posted in quite a bit.

I'm a person who likes to save money. In a way I feel morally obligated to save money wherever I can in areas of major spending. Getting best value is almost like a second job to me.

I figure that if you can be efficient with money in every area of major spending, you can do lots of great things - retire earlier, insulate your family against shocks, give to charity etc.. it gives you options.

Part of my motivation is that my father, who was a far bigger earner than me, was incredibly bad with money and ended up with nothing. So to me being good with money is more important than earning a heap.

    Hello 👋.

Any memorable bargains that you bought since the time your join?

Well the bank of Melbourne deal to refinance a home loan and get 4k was a pretty good one that I've recently signed up to.

Edit* A Redsbaby Metro 2 pram for $350 (nearly half price) about a year ago was handy just when we needed one.

Good choice on the pram! We've got one too.

What's on for the rest of the week with lockdown?

    • I'm lucky enough to be able to work from home, I'll also be looking out for a 30th birthday present for my wife and watching the TV series "Alone" (a bit like Survivor) on the SBS app after work.

      • The last series in the Arctic was the best in my opinion. Good show, reality show without the usual bs.

        • True, it's reality TV that is more authentic than most.

      • Fantastic, happy 30th birthday to your wife and have a good week!

  • Hi mate, user number 1752

  • OP I'd like to congratulate you on bucking the family trend of financial irresponsibility.

It is hard to break out of what you have always seen and known.

I have seen several examples of how those of my parents generations have had a YOLO, buy now live for the now attitude, and that has been passed down to their children of my generation and now beginning to show in their children.

Thats 2 generations of almost living hand to mouth and starting to manifest into a 3rd.

I have been fortunate to be the other way, we weren't rich, but we always took care of the bills, put something aside and only then look to have a little enjoyment.

    Hat off to you sir.

    • Thanks, yes we are what we learn and it can be hard to escape these influences.

Fortunately I have in recent years also had some experiences that influenced me to be more responsible.
