Budget Combo DAC/AMP Recommendations

Hi,

I'm after a DAC/AMP combo, mainly for use in the office. Needs to be powerful enough for the DT770 250ohm headphones. Portability would be a plus.

I can see there are many many chinese models out there, any of them (objectively and subjectively) any good?

Cheers!

  • I am going to throw some ideas as I've been out of touch with headphones.

I've used the usual Schiit Modi / Magni back in the days. Never had any problem and does the job. It was way cheaper before than it is now (and actually cheaper in america). I heard the Fulla 2/3 is better value for money too, but it could have changed now.

I've ended up with an Aune T1se which is a tube dac/amp combo. Perfect for me as my type of music is mostly female vocals. The tubes I've chosen make everything warmer.

You can try looking at DAPs as well that has a DAC combo that you can plug into a PC to make it portable. Last I've used was Fiio X5III that has Spotify built in. Prior to that, I used an iBasso DX50 which I've installed Spotify as well.

  • How budget? The FiiO E10k should be able to drive that.

I'm using the Schiit Fulla 3, but using it with my 80ohm DT770. Should be able to drive the 250ohm version too.

Another one to consider is the iFi ZEN. Heard really good things about that one.

    • I was hoping $100-$150.
Looking at the specs it says recommended headphone impedance 16-150 Ohm. Most budget AMP/DACs seem to have a similar range.

Thanks for the recommendation for the iFi Zen! It looks good.

  • Does it need to be able to run without external power? If not, try this.

  • The best dac/amp combo for the price is a schiit stack, a magni amp with a modi dac.

if you want portability, then the ifi zen is probably your best pick for the price,

    • Cheers, ifi zen looks like it might be the go.

  • if you want portability you could try the fiio btr5 which should drive them, according to the people here:

I use it with Philips X2HR which are only 30ohm but it works well and is good for disconnecting the headphones from my phone.

Btr5 uses usb to connect to a pc so not good if you don't want to do it that way.

  • Schiit Fulla or Hel combined DAC/AMP
    Schiit Magni/Modi stack
Audinst HUD-mini (the MX1 and MX2 are discontinued afaik)
Objective2/ODAC stack (can also find them as a combined product, I think JDS labs make it)

  • +1

Sorry for not replying guys, got busy with other stuff and realised I'll have to save a bit for this. Appreciate all the response!
