False Advertisement ALERT on Truerewards gift cards one of the CHOICE GIFTCARDS merchants

long story short I was gonna buy something from kogan so was looking for giftcards for it.

I saw the cashrewards Choice Gift card on the 16/02/2021

It clearly had A KOGAN PICTURE on there

Proof — > https://paste.pics/a388d5bbfb31f04aaf42a9b592e1dac2

I was gonna buy somthing like 330$ worth of this giftcard

Needing to buy something for my sister's birthday (So giftcard was needed urgently)

And cashrewards had a 4% cashback on it.

Someone luckily recommended me to buy a lower value card first and see if it works or not.

So that's what i did, bought a $30 worth of choice gift card.

Only to find out that KOGAN (Advertised on the photo of the choice gift card) is not coming up to swap the card for.

DONT GET ME WRONG BUT I SEE THIS A TOTAL FALSE ADVERTISEMENT.

I ended up buying the item @website price with the lattitude discount without any giftcards, because item was needed soon.

I contacted the tightarse (cashrewards ozbargain rep), and emailing [email protected], [email protected].

tightarse said me to contact the true rewards, on their phone number 1800 850 739
so called them @ 9 03 Melbourne time, only to be told that they will be calling me back in 10-30 mins, because boss is in a metting.

Suprise no call received, And i ended up calling them back

And what response i got "we had sent you an email reply, did you check that" (i hadn't seen my email yet, and was expecting a call from them)
whatever the case in the call that man told me

  1. they are not going to refund
  2. They did not false advertise
  3. He could see kogan photo on the choice gift card.
  4. Brands are subject to change.
  5. I did not read terms and conditions (which he said says no refund)
  6. I can contact my bank for a transaction dispute but they'll just explain bank same thing that terms and condition says "no refund"

Truerewards (seems more like False rewards to me) had sent me this in email

[email protected]

to me

Good Morning XXXXXXX,

Thank you kindly for reaching out to us with your enquiry.

Unfortunately, once a reward has been purchased, we are unable to provide a refund or replacement.

The Special Terms for the Choice Gift Card on the Cashrewards website, stipulate that ‘brands and values are subject to change based on availability.’

The retail options for the Choice Gift Card do vary from time to time based on supplier availability, hence why we do not explicitly list all the current retail options available.

** You do have a vast range of retail eGift Cards to swap with your Choice Gift Card. If you no longer wish to have the reward, you can certainly gift it to a family member or friend who may utilise it. **

Regards,

End of email

Dont get me wrong But would you not say this False advertisement, and then not refund, is a total scam in my opinion

i would say a big thanks to that person who told me to spend tiny amount on gift card first, due to whom i saved 300$.

But point of this to ALERT AND STOP people to Buying CHOICE GIFTCARDS, and avoid the platforms involved with it.

It may be other brands as well on the photo that are not available. but they should not display the photo if they cannot offer that brand giftcard.

  • *** Update After posting this i got an email from them stating the $30 kogan gift card is now available,
But it too late now, I still am gonna go through my usual transaction dispute process by visa through bank.

And purchase was already made, so i cannot just cancel and reorder. (for free).

So even if The true rewards offers kogan card now, it doesnt solve the major problem (which was to get the card when you need the card)

    I contacted the tightarse

    There's two tightarses?

    • +1

      No, just THE tightarse

  • -2

The brands and values are subject to change based on availability
Literally says it on your linked screenshot

    • Does appear that way… not sure what is missing… :/

This appears to be like coffee cups with “contents is hot”, but still get burn when drinking it?

      • Unless your coffee is cold. Then it's just false advertising

Update Tightarse is really helpful and worked out a really good solution for me

    Thank you Tightarse

It's like buying TCN card from Coles promo but unable to use it at JB Hifi because the brands are subject to change.

Once the issuing company put logo, it's their responsibility to ensure any packing/branding is up to date otherwise it's false advertising.

I totally agree it is more of the true rewards fault, not of cashrewards

      • You have a solid case for chargeback so go for it.

Quote S29 of ACL in your dispute

        https://pinpoint.cch.com.au/360document/legauUio1668520sl270…

        • tightarse already gave me a viable solution i dont want to give him or cashrewards trouble, He really helped me out. and I had already told bank that i no longer want to continue the charge back.

If TA hadn't given me a solution i will have gone ahead on the dispute

@USER DC: Yes tightarse is always helpful so glad he sorted it out for you.

    What was the solution?
Presenting that massive long story that took forever to read, then not specifically telling us the details of the solution is deceptive and misleading.

    • it was a solution similar to result of charge back on transaction just much faster

  • "massive long story that took forever ( INSERTED - yep 5 minutes is now "forever" and '5 minutes' is being very charitable but maybe screen resolution's the problem??) to read, then not specifically telling us the details of the solution is deceptive and misleading." ( maybe valid…. but I don't think the OP was intending this as a primary point when they posted so they downplayed it?).

I'll wait now for the anonymous neg brigade

    • I won’t neg you but this is how it is.
It was a joke about the length of the story and how long it took to read.
It was a long winded boring detailed post with multiple responses and an apparent reluctance to explain the detail of the solution. The lack of detail around the solution is inconsistent with the original post specifics.
The reference to deceptive and misleading is that, this is the term used in consumer law instead of false advertising, which is what the OP called it.
Out of curiosity, what’s your story?
In my mind you are at least 85years old, are so painfully serious no one has laughed in your presence for 60 years and you are just sitting around till midnight till your lock down ends.
      Am I close?

      • Well your post made me laugh, a (sincere) thanks……….best described as old, grumpy and despairing of current mores so you aren't far off.

  • Thanks for the alert.
