Cancel AmEx Card for Pro Rata Annual Fee Refund

Called AMEX today to cancel my card (signed on for bonus points with PointHacks deal) and paid the annual fee which was credited…

They put me through to disconnects who offered to move me to the no fee card free of charge and give me a credit for pro rata annual fee

YMMV - but worth a shot I think!

Can you please elaborate on what benefit you actually got for all that effort?

    • +2

Approx $166 statement credit, oh and the 75k QFF points

  • not sure which AMex card you are referring to…. did you use the $450 flight credit?

  • I honestly didn't think this was a thing but i got the same on my NAB Black card, didn't even ask he just said can i have an account to refund into

Funny because previously no matter when i cancelled i'd still have to fork over the full annual fee.

Looking forward to cancelling my amex gold now.

  • Back when I lived overseas, and every card issuer still charged an annual fee (this was decades ago), this was standard procedure for me. It was also, I assume, pretty common knowledge because everyone else I knew that had a credit card in good standing, did exactly the same and had the annual fee waived. It did necessitate calling in every year to get it done though.

  • Thanks OP. This is good to know. I had always assumed that once you received bonus points, you kissed the annual fee good bye. Clearly not.

    • Yep was a pleasant surprise; I was churning it anyway, and I’m sure once the credit appears I can cancel the no fee card and cashout!
