Bait advertising on boxing day?

Target advertised a sewing machine in their catalogue which sold out almost immediately on boxing day. No rainchecks offered. Any other time this would be considered bait advertising…. we certainly went in to buy it… on the first day of the sale.

Is this still illegal on boxing day?

  • Bait advertising is always tricky - It depends on the number of items they had on sale. A sewing machine wouldnt need to have too many items, like say a box of tissues.

How many would each store normally stock - probably only 2-3 as its not a item sold each day in numbers.

And on Christmas eve they could have sold two as last minute presents at normal price.

    Its hard to prove.

Likewise when you go to Aldi to buy a bicycle. They probably only get 10-15 per store depending on the store size. Some stores sell out that day. Locally I was looking at their $200 alloy Mountain bike. It was sold out in 2 stores the first I was there 10 minutes after opening, the other 1 hour, then 3 weeks later I found one in another store for $150 (It might have been a return - but hadn't been opened).

    • Boxing day is traditionally known as a sale to clear excess stock, target would have had more thn a couple of these, but soooo cheap!!

It's the same as Big W and their $128 petrol lawn mowers, people were complaining about stores running out of stock, but from what we now know, stores had over 50 of these in each store. That's ample stock.

Aldi is purely hit and miss with special buys… I bought a GPS off them, 5" good unit. But it wasn't from any of the local Aldi's. My mate got it for me 2hr away. Then a month later I was at a different Aldi and saw it at a reduced price.

My advice is if you see something you like, brave the wether and do what the others do, line up before the store opens…

Then again I think 5-6 years ago target had a billiard table advertised( it was clearance) but it were in the catalog and I think only 5~ were available in the whole state… They got reported to today/tonight.. Not sure of the outcome..

    • I've often wondered how Aldi hasn't been pulled over the coals time and time again, but they seem to get away with it.

The Target sale was ludicrous. The majority of the 'specials' (clothes mostly) were already running last week. There were some good buys in the catalogue but nowhere near enough stock to reasonably expect to have any left an hour after opening. I was there to get a baby seat (and got one) - they were sold out less than a minute after opening though.

  • I have heard of Target doing this on other items… Can't remember what but my mum went in first thing, the morning of a sale, no item, no help from their workers. Disappointing!
