Android tablet >$1300 on a deal? Miracles happen 🤣

Do these samsung tablets also get 3 year updates?

    • Yeah I'm not sure about that either! Don't get me wrong, I love my Android tablet but I got the Samsung S5e on sale and that does everything I need it to do.

    • Samsung has been pretty good lately. I think they pledged to give them three generations of OS updates.

    • Do these samsung tablets also get 3 year updates?

Yes. You get 3 Android updates, for effectively 4 years of use with the current Android version.

I'd suggest that ChromeOS tablets are a wiser choice over Android tablets. Lenovo Duet is probably the pick at the moment if want tablet form factor.

"I'd suggest that ChromeOS tablets are a wiser choice over Android tablets. Lenovo Duet is probably the pick at the moment if want tablet form factor."
      Why?
ChromeOS tablets from most brands have built-in obsolescence after about 3 years. Then they become attractive door-stops or land-fill, your choice of course.

I am becoming more sceptical of manufacturers employing this business model without any care or concern for either the consumer or the environment. It's bad enough that Apple went down this path without the others following.

      • Chrome is the desktop browser and you can run (most) Android applets. The big advantage is websites don't force you to the Android App and that is a big plus for accessing work / education accounts that require a 'Work' profile of which you can only have one.

Auto Update Expiry is a concern, but it is longer than 3 years. For example, Lenovo Duet expires in June 2028 which 8 years from release. If the Lenovo Duet is still running then, possibly CloudReady might provide extended support.

  • Just in case the Amazon listing runs out of stock or you need another source to price match at JBHiFi, Officeworks has them at the same price:
    * S7+ WiFi 256GB - https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/samsung-ga… , and
    * S7+ WiFi 128GB - https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/samsung-ga…

  • The price inflation of the Samsung tablets is pretty crazy.

When the Tab S2 came out I bought a Tab S 10.5" on clearance for $420 from the Good Guys.
6 years later the equivalent on sale is ~3x the price.

    • +2

You're comparing clearance pricing to regular pricing?

      • +1

It's only a slight exaggeration. Was often under $500 throughout its prime:

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/samsung-galaxy-tab-s2-9…

Kind of agree with lostn below about the regular Tab S7 being more analogous overall, though. It's considered a deal at $800 :-/

Was often under $500 throughout its prime:

It's also worth noting that the Galaxy Tabs before the S6 haven't had flagship specs.
The Tab S2 had a Snapdragon 652 which is a midrange CPU and came with 3GB of RAM.

The Tab S7+ has a flagship processor, 6-8GB RAM, a Wacom digitizer, and a larger screen.

Kind of agree with lostn below about the regular Tab S7 being more analogous overall, though. It's considered a deal at $800 :-/

Yup, but that too has higher specs than the midrange Tab S2 did.

    • This is the plus version which is 12.4".

They do have an 11" version that is more analogous to yours.

There's definitely inflation but so do non-Samsung products. It happens to a lot of electronics. Look at GPU prices right now. Compare the top spec iPhone today against the top spec iPhone in 2014. Today's devices have more RAM, more flash storage, better processors and these things aren't scaling down in price with time like they used to.

And as eug said, you are comparing clearance prices to a current flagship device.

  • Just received my tab s7+ 5G 256GB for $1450 mystic bronze delivered. Hongkong stock. From mymobile.

    • Is that price still available?

Do you have a link to it?

      • Looks like mymobile don't have it anymore. Even though staticice list them as still having it. You can probably call them to check if they can still get them.

      • its on again. $3 cheaper than what I paid for and this time you can choose from Mystic Black and Mystic Bronze.

        • Do they ever get silver?

          • @lostn: Best to ask the shop. You never know they might be able to get it.

S7+ is essentially the same as S7 right except with larger screen? Or is this the upgraded model? I'm still umming and erring about whether I should buy an iPad or Android tab. Would be nice to have everything in Android but the longevity is highly questionable. I'm still using an iPad 2 & Air1 in my house even though none of us use iPhones anymore.
It's a tough decision, what compelled you to go with Samsung (Android) at this price point if you don't mind sharing your thoughts?
    Cheers

If the s7 came with amoled screen and 5G I might have gotten that.

As for longevity. When no more support for updates I go to lineageos.

Quirks i found with these new tab s. No NFC or headphone jack. Not like there's no room for it.

      • Quirks i found with these new tab s. No NFC or headphone jack. Not like there's no room for it.

Agreed. Samsung follows whatever Apple does. They spend a year or two jabbing Apple for removing things and then emphasizing that they themselves are keeping the feature, but after a few years they end up quietly copying them. There's no justification for it and never has been. It's done to increase BT headphone sales which Samsung also happens to make.

They stopped giving pack in headphones with their phones now also.

I think it just comes down to personal preference.. I went and checked the Surface Pro X and s7 and s7+. I liked the s7+. I have previously had the tab s2 and i love it. Its still going strong after all these years.

      • Thanks, that's the sort of thing I wanted to hear. There are so many iPads still floating around but you never hear much about old Android tablets. While I upgrade my phone every couple of years when I replace my tablet/notebook I'm anticipating having it for a much longer timeframe.
So the S2 can still handle most apps people would use on a regular basis?

        • So the S2 can still handle most apps people would use on a regular basis?

Should do. My tab S still runs most apps though I replaced it with a tab S4. And now replaced it with a tab s7+

        • It should. I have mainly used s2 for streaming videos and the battery life has been amazing. The s7+ Is for my partner and will be used for much more than that. So should be interesting on how it tracks. The reviews look promising.

Meanwhile rtx 3060 equiped gaming laptop is priced at $1659. Samsung has totally lost me on their pricing.

Meanwhile rtx 3060 equiped gaming laptop is priced at $1659. Samsung has totally lost me on their pricing.

You could say the same for many things.
      Gaming laptop $1659
      Tab S7+ $1199
      Asus ROG 3 Phone $1399
      Oppo Find X2 $1599
      S20 FE 5G $1249
      iPhone 12 Pro Max $2369
      Pixel 5 $999

Is it Samsung who has lost you, or have you lost track of pricing for technology nowadays? ;)

  • Prices are back to regular

  • You can buy Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+ Wi-Fi, Mystic Black - 128 GB for $972 from Amazon US via Amazon AU Prime.

Thinking of pulling the trigger but have concerns about US model and warranty. Ayyone have experience on this?

    • I got the 256 GB and love the tab

      • I got the 256GB 5G version and loving it.

        • I got the 128GB 4G version and wish I bought the 5G version.

      • Thanks for the replies, however I don't have concerns about the tablet. Only concern I have is warranty when buying from Amazon US. How is warranty handled if something goes wrong with the tablet? What other difference would there be between Aus and US versions of the table?

        • +1

Majority of the us and aus tablet features are the same. Like WiFi is still same. Charger plug is different but still outputs 15 watt power delivery. With the lte and 5g bands is just about where things might differ.

        • +1

I dont think Samsung has worldwide/international warranty.
