Prices of Used VW Golfs Are Astronomical

I'm currently on the lookout for a used ~2017 7.5 Golf auto (DSG) 110TSI. I am after a particular spec: digital dash, r-line pack, driver assistance pack. Prices seem to be around the $32k+ range and anything that is listed close to that price (in Sydney) with the all the features I listed, is sold within a day or two. Am I crazy for expecting to pay $25-27k? Redbook has the private resale prices at $19-22K. Take that higher end figure and add $4k for the extras.

To those that purchased a new/used VW golf of this spec what price did you pay pre-covid?

  • Basic Trendline/Comfortline spec versions are indeed in that $20k price range.

Highline spec at $25k range and R-line pack clean ones are $30k.

    Seems normal.

    • Im not sure how accurate Redbook's pricing on used cars is, from previous experience Redbook over values used cars. In this case, a 2017 MY18 Highline is in the $19-22k resale value range.

Used car prices are up due to covid19 (noone wants to take public transport, as well as people buying new cars from the bushfires and hail storms last year - and new car production temporarily down as factories and supply chains shut down).

    • The camberra hail storm killed lots of VWs . Canberra's love VWs so they bought more with their insurance money.

    • Depends on what you are buying.

Put an order in for a popular Toyota Hybrid mid Dec 20. They said Apr 21 delivery date. Going to be delivered late Feb now. Car dealers are just stretching the truth to get you to buy their current / second hand stock at inflated prices.

    Look at:

    https://tinyurl.com/3rk3ednf

    Some Dealer/Private offers there…

    • I watch that site like a hawk

    • They’re all Mk7 not 7.5 which has much better tech like LED headlights standard

      • Yeah, you'd need to set up a search.
I don't see a lot of people selling w/specs you hope for.

Seems normal. These were $45k new with those packs. The new Golf 8 is still a couple of months away and there hasn’t really been much 7.5 stock for the past year or so.

We just sold our high km MY18 Golf 7.5 wagon with DAP (no R-line or sound/vision) and for $24k cash from a car buyer - so I’m guessing one with lower kms and both packs would get more from a car buyer let alone private sale.

So to answer your question yes I think you’re dreaming to find what you’re looking at for around $25k - maybe wait until the Golf 8 is fully here.

    • Funny story, I was offered $27,500 for a car with 60,000km's and the exact spec I wanted, called back an hour later to make the deal and it had sold for $28K. Kicking myself now.

Do the older versions usually drop a little in price when newer versions are available?

Usually unless the new model is substantially worse. The new golf 8 has touch everything including climate control and steering wheel which people don’t generally like - but it has lots of safety features standard.

      • Have you driven the r-line golf? I’d recommend test driving one before buying. We opted not to have the r-line pack as the lowered stiff suspension and low profile tyres make it a pretty hard uncomfortable ride - if really needs adaptive suspension but that is too expensive for a regular golf.

        • I have test driven one, I personally preferred that stiffer type suspension setup. I know its not for everyone, but I really do enjoy it.

why is there such a demand for VW's in particular?

    • There is demand for everything.

    • +1

More about production shortages and lack of supply for VW. Plus the Golf and Tiguan (their two most popular models) have major refreshes this quarter which means there’s very little old stock for people to buy.

      That's a Toyota not a VW

        and a better car too

  • Keen to know this as well, eyeing a mk5 r32 golf very hard recently.

    • There was a 3 door DSG with Recaro for $12k recently and it disappeared fairly quickly.

I don't think their prices have moved much, nearly sold mine 7 years ago for $15k and look at their prices now. Truth be told, why on Earth do you want one? They're nose heavy, loves a drink (9l/100km on the highway, 12-14l/100km in Sydney's famous gridlock), interior starting if not already falling into pieces, if the clutch isn't gone/replaced they should be fairly near its EOL, if the timing chain hasn't snapped or stretched it's just a matter of when that happens, if the a/c compressor and condenser haven't been replaced recently that will also need to be done (twice now in the 12 years that I've owned mine), the $650 fuse blocks that's considered as a consumable item and trust me when that goes it has no warning and leave you stranded.

  • Nice looking vehicle those things, so good luck finding what you want.

But I am still wondering, why don't they come with a functioning Speedo and or indicators?

    • Thank you!

Not sure I understand the last bit though.

      • Haha, if you watch them on the road, it seems they are quite often the ones speeding past especially in roadworks, and that one or three blinker flashes appears is all their systems are capable of. Also, the new Hilux is made in the same factory…lol.

  • GF is looking for a Golf Alltrack. She'd buy new if there were any in Australia.

2017 or 2018 models are asking around $2k less than RRP when new.

    • The stock shortages are the culprit here, you simply cant go in and buy one. I've been reading up on whirlpool forums from pre covid times, lots of people seemed to be buying demo (some new) MY19 and MY20 top spec golf's for the $35-37k mark, people are asking that price for a 2017 model! The Golf R pricing has remained pretty stable from what I can see though, for new or demo anyway.
