Porting with No Balance

Hi, I have a Telstra sim with no balance. I wanted to port that number over to Aldi and keep it as a backup. Do I need to recharge the SIM before initiating the port or I can ask customer service to help with the text message?

At the minimum it will cost me $10 to recharge the Telstra number to receive the SMS.

Its a nice number. I want to keep it.

incoming sms are free right? should not be required afaik

    • Sadly not on the Telstra Sim, it says I need to recharge to continue using the service. I tried calling it and sending SMS as well but it doesn't receive.

Are you sure it's still an active service?

And check to see if it's got incoming calls and messages barred. This can often happen to old accounts.

        • Its an active service, got it reactivated just now and shows up in my Telstra app. Like if you don't recharge your prepaid, can it still receive SMS for porting? I tried sending SMS to this number but nothing is being received. Maybe I have to recharge it once again.

Just wanted to see if maybe someone asked support for help with the porting out sms with telstra

You should still be able to receive the porting sms request with no credit. PM your number, and I can check it’s status

    • What's the result?

      • its fine.. op should be able to port to whoever with no credit

Worth the $10 then! If you are tight for $10 then maybe switch to a low cost Kogan for ~$5 a month to save money before switching to Aldi

  • You can call the receiving provider to port it, I've done it before.

    • I think the issue is that the OP can't receive the SMS to give to the provider. I'm guessing the OP's number has been non-recharged for quite a while…

  • When I ported over to catch from optus. They sent me a sms to my optus sim to confirm. I had no more credit but was able to reply and 'YES' to the text. The porting provider also gave me the option to call up and provide then with the code.
