Ryzen 5 3600 or Intel Core i5 10600KF or Wait for AM5 / LGA1400

Hey guys, I’ve been out of the PC game lately and was wondering if I should upgrade to the above CPU as a start, I’ll be doing a full rebuild as my current set up I think is pretty old but if anyone could help me tell if I should just wait for the new generation boards / CPUs to come out that would be really helpful!

I’m currently running:

AMD Ryzen 5 1600 CPU with Gigabyte GA-AB350M-HD3 Motherboard
16GB DDR4 3200
GTX1070

I mainly play a tonne of wow and Total war variants.

Any help is appreciated to distract me from this ridiculous ear infection as well 😂

Ryzen 1600 isn't that old yet. But Ryzen 3600 should be a very simple drop-in upgrade if you need some more fps.

    • Make sure the bios has been upgraded before you do anything.

  • That GTX1070 will sell for decent $$$

  • With the GTX1070, gaming is still predominantly GPU-limited, which means you won't see much differences until you upgrade your GPU.

Hardware Unboxed did a review on 4 years, so 4 generations of the Ryzen 5 CPUs on GPU scaling: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlfwXqODqp4

In short, don't worry about upgrading CPU for now if you are only mainly gaming, you'll only notice differences after upgrading to or above RX5700XT/RTX 2070Super GPU tiers.

If you still really want to upgrade, then I'd really just opt for the Ryzen 3600, and keep holding on until Ryzen 7000 or Intel 12th/13th gen.

    • Would there be a point in updating my MB too https://www.centrecom.com.au/gigabyte-b550-gaming-x-v2-amd-a… ?

I guess that would lock me into AM4 when AM5 is coming out.

      • Nope.
In short, do NOT upgrade your CPU or GPU. HODL. Wait for a year or so.

Then you can maybe look at the AM5/AM4+ motherboards.
And look at the next Zen4 CPU (r7-6700) for upgrade.
Finally, the GPU scene should be cooling off after that….. so look at upgrading to maybe a RX 6700Xt.

Sell your current system as it is (mobo, cpu, ram, gpu, psu). You can salvage the case if you really like it. Same goes for peripherals like keyboard, mouse, headset, speakers, monitor, chair, desk, etc etc.

      • Agree with above regarding holding for now. As while Ryzen 3600 price isn't too bad, but it isn't that great for any significant/noticeable performance improvements. And the GPU market atm is just crazy.

Regarding MB upgrade, if you really need certain features the B550 board offer then maybe? It really depends on how badly you need the features (vs just want). Otherwise if your case allows, I'll probably look into using an add-in PCIe board and compare the cost VS B550 board.

  • Keep the CPU, upgrade the GPU if possible, it is probably not possible right now so just keep what you have and just game. Wait for better GPU times.

    • Yeah I see, was gonna upgrad the MB to my reply above just for the SSD and RAM benefits but probably not worth it
