Are You a Pirate?

Hi all, I was wondering in this day and age is there still a need to be a pirate?

With so many services free and with trials I see less reason to resort to the Black Flag. Unless you prefer a real trial

Spotify, Youtube, Netflix, SBS on Demand, Binge, Crunchyroll etc

  • i pay for Prime for Amazon shipping, and use Prime Video, but its motly piracy as a lot of the shows i like to watch are not on streaming services for various reasons.

  • Not a pirate anymore no, partly because of streaming services (though they are all a bit lacklustre) and lack of time. I also suspect past piracy resulted in credit card fraud through a virus or malicious software.

If I was going to be a pirate these days I'd do it with a device dedicated to piracy so as to not worry about viruses unless the whole network was infected (not likely).

  • Used to torrent, then Kodi, then apk TV apps. Now, just get the family to each get a major streaming app and we all share. Only one that I pirate is Spotify.

    • Freezer is lit

      • I'll check it out, but atm I have access to all the streaming apps in aust, and only have to pay for one, so it's great.

  • I think about this question a lot. Once upon a time piracy was the only way to get most things, there just wasn't any other reasonable option. Nowadays it seems there's so much content as you mentioned, between Netflix (which is univeaal now surely), SBS On demand, ABC iVoew, other free to air and streaming services. And my extended collection of films that I have picked up for next to nothing due to people dumping all their physical media.it always leads me to think about if I really need anything?

The related question is do you really need a VPN? Most people I know have one not for privacy but to access geoblocked content. I feel like there's enough local sources without having to pay for that expense. Tbh even if I ditched Netflix, I could probably got 2 years easily without being bored. I guess you pay to watch specific shows but do you really need to? Modern day dillemmas

  • Yo is this post made by the cops to get us lol

  • I don't know what to answer, but for me no. I used to, but I feel the prices now are fair.

Spotify killed any desire I had to pirate music, can't say there's a single service equivalent for movies/TV shows.

^ This, Spotify works so much better than the fragmented system where we have Netflix, Stan, Prime, Disney+, Binge, AppleTV+, 10 All Access, plus more coming soon.

  • Thanks to streaming sites, I've never had to spend anything on movies tickets, DVDs and subscription services and only had to pay an internet bill.

If I wasn't a pirate, I would have gotten pretty bored during lockdown.

I pirate because its superior to streaming sites in many ways.

No idea why I would pay for a inferior service that doesn't have anything worth watching.

  • I just want to let the kids watch iview shows like Playschool on the tablet during long road trips, but iview only seems to work with streaming and an internet connection. I'd gladly pay, but when it come to epsiodes released in the last few years, are there any options that don't involve help from Jolly Roger?
