I got some popsicles in the basement

  • +4

Devo that they've discontinued the lamb and rosemary pies

    • +3

For me it’s the ‘slow cooked beef with portabello mushroom and Merlot’. I haven’t been able to get that for over a year and it was one of the most incredible flavours, none of the others compared for me.

  • Anyone tried the chicken? Any good?

    • +1

Very good. Having them for dinner tonight.

  • +6

the picture on the pie box looks awesome, packed full of gigantic pieces of juicy meat, but the reality is so so so disappointing with more pastry than meat and you will be lucky to get two chunks.

    • +15

Well compare to other pies, these are kind of decent. Especially at 3.9

      • +1

… for 2. Actually my boy thinks they're great except for the big chunks of meat. <sigh>

    • +6

Every time I get them they feel worse. Top bit of pastry spread way out over the sides, and you could see the sides were way thicker than they are in the picture. Used to get a nice layer of crunchy pastry, now it's all crap and soggy because it's too thick.

Feels like a couple of years ago these were a real premium pie, these days I'm better off going to 7/11.

      • +2

it's almost false advertising when what you get is a big pile of pastry with some thickened gravy and a tiny piece of grizzle.

        • +6

It's okay, we all grizzle a little on OzB

    • +1

Yeah there ought to be a law against that. There is a law…but it's not very good: https://www.choice.com.au/food-and-drink/meat-fish-and-eggs/…

I would vote for a real meat pie political party if there was one. Only one promise to keep.

    • +2

@900: Check here later in the week. I'll take a picture and (try to) post it. You do the same for 4n20?

    • +3

I get them about once a month and I've always had plenty of meat in there. Don't think it's ever been less than about 5 decent pieces.

    • +5

Would have to disagree on this, I think they are good quality pies. Also my Dad was a pastry chef making pies for 20 years and he also thinks these are the best pies in the supermarket.

  • +7

These are pure gold, Chunky beef and pepper is the way to go. Cheers

  • +1

whoa haven't seen the 10 pack go for $1 for a long time

  • +2

Love these pies. Thanks for sharing

    • +2

Yep. Plenty of chunky meat, good sauce, very good pastry. Helps that I have a Breville microwave with crisper pan which cooks them perfectly. If you haven't tried the ALDI equivalent (beef $3.99) it's also very good. My guess is it's also made by HA.

      • I tried the Aldi ones when i ran out of these and was not a fan at all.

I've had hundreds of HA's and 1 piece of gristle that i can remember and had multiple pieces of gristle in that Aldi pack i tried, they just don't taste as quality either.

        • +1

Are you talking about the same ALDI pies as we are? Gourmet Elmsbury pies in a cardboard box, just like HA gourmet pies. Only two varieties - chicken and veg, and sous vide beef. I'm with knasty below. ALDI sous vide is near the top of the tree.

ALDI standard pies are mediocre I agree. Haven't encountered any gristle in either the HA or the Elmsbury gourmet pies myself.

          • @[Deactivated]: Yeah i'm talking Elmsbury.

Maybe i'll give them another chance when i get desperate and have not stocked up on HA enough, might have just got unlucky with the gristle.

  • +4

    Upvote on the pies.
I defrost them lightly on the microwave then air fry them.
    Quality ingredients.

    • +2

Or to speed things up further you can heat them up in the microwave too but wrap in damp paper towel before finishing off in oven/air fryer.

      • +1

        Interesting method.
        I'll try that next time

        Thank you!

      • +1

        I do this method

      • Do you guys do chips in the air fryer at the same time?

        • In the oven i do yeah

        • +1

I prefer Birds Eye Deli Seasoned Roast Potatoes Rosemary & Garlic than chips.

    • +5

my quick way of cooking them, ends up with nice crusty pastry.
      2.5 minutes in microwave high
      5-7minutes in oven 165c

      • Exactly what i do, damn they are good.

    • +2

No air fryer at work so I microwave then finish them in a sandwich press.

      • +1

Now that's outside the box thinking.

      • Nice. That is how I do them at work too. My co-workers get overly impressed with this method.

        • +3

It produces decent results but hasn't won me any street cred at my work.

  • Nice de

  • +1

The Aldi ones are ok to scratch they craving itch when not on special, but they certainly don't have the same range of flavours.
Will be nice to have some of those other ones again!

    • +1

Aldi do premium pies at $4.99 for 2… I forget the "brand" name they give them, but:-

Just compare directly against the respective Herbert Adams, including the nutrition ratings on the back and work out where Aldi get them from…

      • +1

$3.99 in Canberra. Everything about them says made by HA. I'm not a fan of either the HA or ALDI chicken pies but the ALDI/HA meat pie is my second fav behind the HA beef and pepper.

      • +3

I've done a side by side with the Aldi Elmsbury premium sous vide beef and I prefer the Aldi ones. Probably made by herbert but something about the aldi recipe tastes better to.me. dont have to wait for specials either.

      • +1

My point was Aldi only have the two flavours …

    Price changed?

    • Starts on Wednesday.

  • -5

    worst pies ever!

    • +1

Well then, what pies do you pick?

      • -5

just plain 'ol four n twenty pies put this "gourmet" pie to shame.

  • YEEESSSSSS! Herbert Adams Pies on sale! Thanks.op.

  • +1

    no veggie ones on special?

  • These pies have ruined all other pies for me, whenever I eat anything else (aldi/4ntwenty etc) I'm just thinking the whole time "I wish this was a herbert adams pie"

  • Nice, time to stock up.

    Their peppercorn pie is awesome.

  • +1

So tempted to eat one box of each pie but my freezer ain't got the space. If I had to pick 3 boxes, which would people recommend?

    • +1

      Beef and Peppercorn.
Beef With Shiraz & Cracked Pepper
      Beef and Button Mushroom.

      Are my top 3.

Creamy Chicken & Leek is also great if you like Chicken pies.

      • +1

Shiraz cracked pepper was terrible imo

I'd replace with the creamy chicken actually creamy

  • +1

Nine and a half hours since deal posted and only one comment on the tea. GOLD!

  • -8

$4 for 2 pies is a rip off? $1 for 10 pk of tea bags is a rip off. This should be on ozRipOffs, not ozBargain.

    • +2

VW Beetle prices were low compared to BMWs for a reason cakesyy. $2 for a satisfying, quality pie isn't close to a ripoff imo but quality V price is personal choice. Something most of us weigh up almost daily. I'd be interested in what pies you recommend in place of these. Don't mind Ww home brand occasionally myself.

Agree that many of the teas can be had far cheaper in larger packs, esp when discounted, but some of the specialty teas only come in 10 packs.

  • +1

Love these pies. They’re great for that price and for frozen ones. Heck yeah.

  • on a side note, been waiting for the 1/2 price four'n twenty pies (meat free variety) since nov…… craving but can't justify full price!

  • +1

I'm yet tro try better pies than this brand. Got myself few boxes of different flavours I haven't tried before.
    OP, you are a legend.

  • +2

Well i got all my freezer could handle today, i really need to buy a second freezer purely for these pies.

  • The Shiraz and cracked pepper one was pretty horrible, bitter and way too peppery
