Best Bang for Buck Washing Machine & Dryer? (Preferably $1200 AUD Combined Budget)

Hi All,

Simple question

Moving into new house with my partner and whitegoods aren't exactly my area of expertise…

Is there any recommendations anyone has that will suit our needs (2 people) for a decent washing machine and a dryer? Budget around $1200 AUD for both combined

7KG? We're honestly not sure and would love some feedback!

Cheers

I like AppliancesOnline to compare features and read reviews of each model.

It sounds like you are considering a combo washer/dryer? Don't do that unless you have to because of space: they can only dry half as much as they can wash, so not only are they twice the cost, you can also only do half the clothes.

Otherwise: consider getting big one of each, around 10kg if you can afford it, good brands, if you don't like doing the washing every day, or plan to have kids in the next decade. If not, small and relatively cheap are probably actually fine, just make sure you check the reviews.

Don't need a dryer in Australia unless you live in an apartment, dry continent. It isn't like North America and Europe where it snows in winter and you can't dry stuff outside.

I'd have to disagree, I've had many days in Winter where I've hung clothes on the line around 8am for them not to dry by sundown. While the dryer is a last option, it's definitely needed sometimes.

I hung my clothes in an apartment for five years too with no issues.

I'm going to assume you don't have a big family? When all the kids have run out of uniforms and there's been no sun for days, a dryer is very handy.

Unemployed? Retired? Or someone in your house is?
Then you might have enough time to hang out the washing, bring it back in, do the extra ironing, re-wash it when it gets dirty or rained on, etc. If so, you'll save a couple of hundred bucks a year on electricity too.

Have a job? A couple where both work? Big family but everyone's busy?
Your time is worth way too much to fluff around with all that. Just get a dryer.

If you're moving somewhere that has space to hang clothes, I would suggest you reconsider your need for a dryer right now. If you forgo the dryer, you'll save yourself some money which you can then put against any of the 1,000,000 other costs that come with moving. Later down the track if you absolutely must have one for whatever reason, then fork out the money. It also gives you time to wait for a decent sale instead of buying right now.

As for recommendations, I have been very happy with my Bosch Series 8 washing machine. Got it from Appliances Online on special. It's quiet, reliable and offers all the features I need.

$1m house what is an extra thousand.

Exactly. This is dumber than the people who build a $300,000 home (on a $500,000 block) but won't spend the 2% extra to get ducted AC, and just suffer for months of the year in the heat and cold.

  • following but i want JUST a dryer any recommendations?

    • depends on your laundry space. If little ventilation, then heat pump is recommended. But if its in a well ventilated space then vented could do the job for a cheaper up front cost (but more costly to run)

Don't buy a combo washer/dryer. Most if not all combo machines don't do a good job when comes to either washing or drying. Had a LG combo and worst I've had. Now with a Bosch washer and a dryer and couldn't be happier.

    • That sucks that you've gotten bad units. Mine has worked fine so far for over 3 years.

  • Just use a clothes line or clothes horse instead of the dryer
