Recommendation of a Bottle of Shiraz

Hi Guys,

Looking to spend a couple of hundy on a bottle (or bottles) of nice shiraz. Any recommendations?

    Define "nice"

    • doesnt result in 'chunder'

    • +2

      "Nice" - not in a box :P

Actually, some brands sell the exact same wine in a box and a bottle. In many cases now, boxed wine is not worse for flavour. It’s also actually more efficient in terms of transporting and storage, it lasts longer, and uses less resources to create the packaging.

        • +1

And you can affix it to a clothesline.

        • Sorry but I think it’s a bit misleading to say it lasts longer. Cask wine has a shorter shelf life due to oxygen ingress into the bag and through the tap, which prematurely ages it. This process increases once opened. Commercial bottled wine that is an identical blend would be best drunk within 12 months but could last another 12 (peak drinking period only, doesn’t mean it goes off) depending on the variety. Red varieties will last better than Sauv Blanc for example.

It won’t be worse for flavour if you drink it pretty soon after purchase and it’s within best before date.

          • @OnlyifMyPrice: BBD?
I've never seen that on wine, or did you mean on casks?

          • +2

@OnlyifMyPrice: Sorry, lasts longer once opened. You can have a cask bottle open for a few weeks before needing to to get rid of it. Bottled wines last 3-4 days, maybe a week max.

    • Hahahahah! Getting the most out of that couple of hundy is where I need OzB >:)

    Barossa of course.

    Greenock Creek Roennfeldt Road

Langmeil Orphan Bank or Pure Eden (the Pure Eden is amazing, but the Orphan Bank is so close at half the price)

    • +1

      Barossa of course.

      Much prefer a Coonawarra Shiraz…

      • I like them thick and syrupy.
Each to their own of course.

        • I like them thick and syrupy.

Just reduce them a bit over the stove…

Penfolds Koonunga Hill. Yummy and never disappoint. Hmm I should get a bottle myself now since I just ran out.

      Isn't that a Cab Sav ????

      • +1

They come in both Shiraz and Cab Sav.

  • Check out some of the Geoff Hardy K1 stuff.

Mollydooker Velvet Glove Shiraz, McLaren Vale ~$170
2015 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Michael Shiraz ~$140
2018 Mount Pleasant 1880 Vines Old Hill Vineyard Shiraz, Hunter Valley ~$160
    2017 Hobbs 1905 Shiraz, Barossa Valley ~$150
2011 Tulloch 'Hector of Glen Elgin' Shiraz, Hunter Valley ~$150
    2018 Tyrrell's Johnno's Shiraz, Hunter Valley ~$140
2012 Dalwhinnie Eagle Series Shiraz, Pyrenees ~$180

    • Amazing! Thanks

      • Thanks, but it was only a Google search.
I have tried a couple of those listed (Wynns, Mount Pleasant, Dalwhinnie) but I wouldn't personally spend that much on a bottle.

    • Never took you for a wine connoisseur JV?? Thanks for the recommendation

The 2016 Bowlers Run was a particularly good drop.

      • It still is…

        • If you can find it.

          • @JIMB0: Lots of stores around me showing stock. (incl. Frankston)

            • @jv: I can only see a 2019 vintage.

              • @JIMB0: My bad… I wasn't looking at the vintage.

      • Whats the 2019 like?

    • It's out of stock, must be very popular.

      • I can still see stock in several stores near me.

I recently polished off a 2012 Penfolds St Henri Shiraz which I received as a gift - I thought it was just magnificent and couldn't resist purchasing a couple of bottles from a more recent vintage. I don't think I've ever had a Penfolds shiraz that I didn't like - but the St Henri was next-level good.

Have a browse through the Torbreck range.

  • Hills of Grace, any year.

    • Agree.

Mount Edelstone is in the price range.

  • Penfolds St Henri 2010

  • barolo - can't beat a good barolo

    • But OP wanted a Shiraz

      • probably never had a barolo - king of wines

        • I've had a barolo, and enjoyed it.
Don't know if OP has tried it.

          • @GG57: why i posted - paying 125 plus for shiraz is questionable if you can ship in barolos for nearly the same…

            • @petry: I'm not disagreeing, but OP wanted to "…spend a couple of hundy on a bottle (or bottles) of nice shiraz…".
Your response to OP seems to be - don't.

              • @GG57: nope my comment was to inform op of the existence of alternatives which are hard to find here…

  • I hate wine but I found this very nice…

Here's my pick for Bemybubble's price point (but you don't have to spend that much to drink great wine). Produced just up the road from where I live from vines that are 153 years old:

    2017 Thomson Family Shiraz

But I'm spoilt for choice here, so I'll throw in this recommendation too:

    2018 Langi Shiraz

If you're looking for a nice $50 bottle, Torbreck - The Struie is a nice drop. In the couple of hundy range, Torbreck Runrig comes in at $300. Personally it's better than Grange and without the eye watering price tag. But as someone else has previously mentioned, work your way through the Torbreck range and find out for yourself what you like best. There are plenty to choose from and they are delicious!!!

    • The Struie is definitely a nice drop and outclasses some other more expensive wines in my opinion. I haven't struck a Torbreck wine I haven't liked. Torbreck The Steading is a nice GSM.

Can you tell us what brands and regions you have liked (or the recipient of your gift has liked, if it is a gift) in the past? That way, you’ll get a better recommendation to suit your preferred style. Style is a key factor as to whether you’ll like it

    • Exactly.
And also what OP has not liked.

  • Gg57 has a good list IMO. I don’t like any taylors or jacobs creek. Bin 389, an older one for this amount, is excellent. Also Torbreck & st henri. I transfer half a 750ml bottle contents to a 375ml screw cap bottle immediately, red or white, & it keeps for weeks (unless v. old) if we want half now.

I really like the dancing fig - but the Shiraz is great too - I think very good value at this price.

  • Bethany wines - GR Reserve Shiraz 2017 $125 magic stuff. https://www.bethany.com.au/wine/gr-reserve-shiraz-2017

  • Thanks everyone!

  • Surely the OP is looking for a sparkling shiraz?
