Behind TV Lighting Recommendation

Hi all,

As per the subject, I would like to know how to best setup lighting behind TV and which one would be recommended? I do not have any smart lighting in our house so I have no idea where to start from. Thank you.

I was looking at this just yesterday as I'm rebuilding my tv cabinet.

You can buy led light strips that are powered by usb or power wall outlet. Difference will come in depending on how long your strips are, ie. 70inch tv will require a longer strip than 40inch tv, and hence more power.

Strips will come with double sided tape (generally) and you simply stick to back side of tv and to which power source you pick.

RGB strip is probably the best method if you can get one powered by the TV USB outlet.

I've just got a cheapo smart bulb in one of these mounts

connected to a smart power strip so the light turns on with the TV.

Smart bulb tuned down to the brightness I want it to run using a temporary hotspot, and now disconnected from the internet so it's not a security hole in my network.

Out of interest why would you put lights behind your TV?

      Because lifes too perfect..

Reduce the contrast in a darkened room

LCD panels typically have bad contrast ratios and often have issues with backlight bleed. If you turn all the lights off and have a dark room, these issues are really obvious.

If you use a strip, the wall directly behind it will be brighter than black, so it helps these issues.

    • New bling?

Look up "bias lighting" for some pictures and description.

I recommend a cool-white LED strip powered by USB. Plug into TV, set it to only 'charge' when TV is on, and you have an automated strip system.

Cool white is very neutral for all colours and all I'd recommend.

RGB not required, all these 'lights change colour in time with whats on the screen' fancy 'smart lighting' is actually way worse for the visual experience - you have way too much of the wall changing colours.

    • how do you set to on 'charge' when the TV is on? Curious

      • Setting in the TV. Some will keep the USB port powered up even when the TV is in standby

  • Not OzBargainy as very expensive …. but the Philips Hue Gradient is very clever with how it mimics the colour on the screen.. 55" TV version at $399. Though probably a bit annoying too

  • If you have any interest in electronics at all, check out Hyperion (google: hyperion raspberry pi)

Otherwise check out the ambilight and then look through similar systems if it takes your fancy
