Sydney Blinds - Not Honouring Warranty

We had some fly screen sliding doors put in less than a year ago by Sydney Blinds.
Today, we realised part of the netting had become detached from the door, creating an opening. No unreasonable amount of pressure had been applied to the screen to cause the issue as far as we know.

I've contacted them with the expectation of having this repaired under warranty, given that it hasn't yet been a year since installation. Instead, I was told that they have a three month warranty period on fly screen doors and won't be repairing it without a charge for service & parts.

I can't find any warranty information besides here which states a general warranty for screens for 12 months. Our original order form also states to refer to the website for warranty information.

I'm still back and forth arguing with them on this. Is it reasonable to expect it should be repaired under warranty? If so, what are my options if they continue to refuse?

  • It's a fly screen, just take out a screwdriver and reattach, else it'll have a rubber seal that'll pop back in - plenty of youtube videos on it, should take 5 minutes provided the fly screen itself isn't damaged
    .
I don't think it's a warranty job given usual wear and tear could force it out/it's not a structural failure.

Cheers. I haven't looked into the self-repair route yet but still feel like such an problem shouldn't happen so quickly, which to me suggest product quality or installation issues. Most other fly screen doors I've seen have lasted for over twenty years without similar problems.

Quicker to spend $3 and buy this and roll the spline back in yourself: https://www.bunnings.com.au/rolltrak-bright-yellow-budget-sp…

    • Thanks, I'll check it out.

    • This tool saved my life when I replaced my fly screens - Makes it 3000000 times easier.

Fly Screens are soft material that is prone to being stretched, torn, poked and weathered.

Treat it as a consumable almost.

Standard Fly screens are like $10 from the hardware store and it takes me about 15 mins to rip out old net, replace with new net (without the cool rolly tool thingie) and trim off the excess.

I think that is your best bet.

Feel free to insist on continuing down your path though.

Thanks, I'd take such a option if the door was older. I just don't think it should pop out after less than a year unless the product quality or installation job was poor.

    So, they blinded you?

I can't find any warranty information

Any mesh used on this product has a manufacturer’s warranty of 1 year
Unless mesh has been upgraded where the warranty for that mesh will apply.

Wasn't difficult to find, the link is in the footer of the main pages

    • Thanks, blinded indeed. Still nothing that suggests the three month warranty though.

They appear to be stating that all the components are covered for a year but not stating the construction covered to last that long, but as they havent explicitly stated the final completed screen is only covered for 3 months I think its reasonable for you to expect based upon their warranty that it would be 1 year.

Therefore I think you can push the agenda, and I think you would ultimately win, but if the solution is 5 mins work and a $3 tool from bunnings then it ultimately feels like the simpler solution. Fact that they are arguing over something that would take them 5 mins to do themselves does make them look pretty shitty though IMO.

        • Just get one of the team to swing by for 5 minutes.

But then non chargeable jobs means less money and a smaller property given the state of the property market, every minute counts.

Australia is really shooting itself in the foot these days. OzB forum should send Sydney Blinds an invoice for consultation.

We had ours 1 day before the dog ran through it

    • Might I suggest stainless steel mesh next time. That'll surprise the dog.

      • Actually pet mesh is much better. The steel mesh is awful to install and can tear surprisingly easily.

Yes that can happen when treated incorrectly.

    Care to share a picture?

No unreasonable amount of pressure had been applied to the screen to cause the issue as far as we know.

I think you mean, no unreasonable amount of pressure that YOU know about. Are you the only person that uses the door?

Anyhow I agree with the company. Flyscreens are a consumable, just get the roller linked above and fix it yourself.

Should have got a metal security screen door instead. Plenty amounts of unreasonable pressure won't pop those out.

  • I don't think the mesh popped out all by itself. It most definitely had help from a foot, hand or other carried item.
