Logitech MX Master 3 Vs MX Master 2 and Original MX Master, Comparing Price

Hi everyone,

I am a student who is mainly going to be using the MX Master 3 as a desktop mouse for browing and studying purposes.

Can anyone who has used the different generations of MX Master comment on whether buying the current 3rd generation one is worth it at its price point, in comparison to buying one of the previous generation at a much lower price, around 50-70% of the MX master 3.

Also, are the any particular issues with the MX master 3 from an anecdotal POV that is a dealbreaker for you, that you believe might be worth waiting until the MX Master 4 comes out? I have read about people finding the scrolling of the 3 to be less intuitive than the 2S, thoughts?

Cheers

There are dozens of reviews online and Youtube that explore this very question. Short answer is the 3 has some decent quality of life upgrades but not groundbreaking. Any of them within your budget will be fine.

Where are you seeing the 1 and 2 at 50% of the price of the 3 (unless you're comparing a sale price to the RRP of the 3)

I have had the MX master original for several years now. Had the performance MX previously. Sold it to buy the MX Master and get Bluetooth connectivity. As it turns out nothing beats the Logitech receiver.

Will probably look to upgrade to the 4 when it comes out for my home setup and the original can go to work.

Check out some YouTube comparisons. If you want to save some dollarydoos get the 2S.

    • you prefer using the receiver?

      • Yes I do. Mostly because my windows work laptop has all sorts of security crap on it that messes with bluetooth….

I've had all three generations. I prefer the ergonomics of the MX 1/2 (but maybe I'm just not used to the MX3 - I've only had it a few months). If you have the 2, I wouldn't recommend upgrading.

I had every single MX Revolution since 2006 till up to Logitech MX Master 3 (5 different versions) and they all get better as each new model in feature wise.
Their build quality getting better as well now, older versions didn't last as much, even they had longer warranty period than current 2 years?.
Now i'm using M2 at work and M3 at home, but ergonomics is all about getting used to it.

    • how does the magnetic scrolling of the M3 feel to you compared to the M2? I notice the side buttons on the M3 seem better placed

    I've got all 3 generations too;

MX 2S has Logitech Flow which is useful when using multiple devices at the same time (I use mine with 1 Win10 and 1 Mac together), as well as some new gestures. Can map screenshot to buttons (vs snipping tool only on MX 1 - or maybe I couldn't work out how to do it on MX 1?)

MX 3 has a much nicer scroll feeling in my opinion (being magnetic vs mechanical) and USB-C charging. The back/forward navigate buttons are in a different position too. I do find the scroll on this one doesn't like OSX though; sometimes a small scroll doesn't do anything, other times scrolls far too much

The MX 3 is often $129, and if not you can easily get TGG/HN/JB to do it for that price; if the MX 2 is $80 or less I would be fine with it for that price too

i have the master, master 2s and the 3.
i like the 2s most, its the best weighted, the 3 is taller than the other 2

    • the 2s is larger right?

      • yeah 2s is wider, the 3 is taller and narrower

I had both Master and Master 2S. I liked them both.

The only issue is the thumb button. It would be stuck after few years which disables the function of moving the cursor. My Master lasted around 2 years. Master 2S lasted around 3 years. When I had the issue with Master, I thought it may be just bad luck hence Master 2S was bought. I didn't expect the 2S would have the same issue again. FYI. I didn't use the thumb button at all.

  • At my last job I used the original MX Revolution for 14 years. Never replaced, though the thumb pad wore through years ago. Not looking forward to finding a replacement at new job (they use standard dell rubbish).

EDIT: If anyone knows which (if any) keyboard has the same size layout as the original MX desktop set that would be great. Not sure of the exact keyboard model but they came together. Before the LCD stuff.

  • MX1 has been good to me although the gesture button keeps sticking and causing issues (mouse won't track when gesture is jammed) so looking to upgrade. USBC charging would be nice so I can ditch the micro usb at my desk

  • Just got the Master 3 today and its been great.
