To Those with an AV Receiver (and Stan), Is Stan Really 5.1?

Does anyone have an AV receiver that can indicate the signal type coming from a source confirm if Stan is really 5.1 audio when they say the content is?

In my home theatre setup, I can see on my receiver, when I select a Netflix movie/show that says its 5.1 audido, it comes through as 5.1.

My AV Reciever has lights to indicate the signal type. eg. stereo or surround etc.

But, when I play a movie/show from Stan that says 5.1, it comes through as stereo.

I also have Amazon prime and I have mixed results with that service. I do check the content says 5.1 in the service first.

I can confirm my receiver supports Dolby Digital Plus. I googled this to confirm and I am on the latest firmware.
My TV also supports Dolby Digital Plus as indicated by the audio menus options.

TV app —> HDMI over ARC port —> Receiver
AV Receiver: Yamaha RX v481
TV: TCL 65x7

Thanks.

  • Could be your TV not sending the correct output.
Could also be that the TV app doesn’t support the audio codec on your model.

I get 5.1 on Stan from my PS4. So it might be what hybridx mentioned.
Worth testing with a different device for Stan if you have that option: laptop, game console, Chromecast etc

Sounds the same as what I am seeing. I only get 2 channel sound from the Stan app on my Hisense TV to my receiver (5.1 on the Netflix app though), but 5.1 when using the Stan Xbox One S app.

I am guessing it must be a limitation of the Stan TV apps.

  • Thanks everyone so far. I swear I tested this on PS4 a while back and wasn't convinced of the results, but now I can't remember exactly if I did the test properly. ie I have to press "direct" on my receiver so that no dsp fx influences the which speakers light up on the surround sound indicator panel.

Today I tested on ps4, with a Stan stereo video and a Stan 5.1 video, and made sure to press "direct" on the receiver and the lights change correctly.

The PS4 is connected directly to the receiver.

  • sounds like is a app issue.
