Why Pizza Hut/Domino's are so bad in Australia?

Hey guys, I've had Dominos and Pizza Hut in different countries and Australia's is by far the worst. Don't get me wrong, it's still bread and cheese so it's not terrible, it's just very bland and boring, not to mention the ridiculous size of the pies down under.

I can't really tell what is it, don't know if it's the dough, the sauce or what else but if you've ever had a slice of american pizza hut/dominos it's a whole another ball game. I mean, just google a picture of their pizza and see it by yourself.

Not being raised in Australia I wonder if that's just them adapting to the local market or something else? Maybe that's UK influence? Never had UK pizza but I've seen in videos that at least the size looks the same.

  • Don't mean to hijack the thread OP but I have exactly the same opinion of Hungry Jack's and Starbucks. I love the BK Whoppers all around the world but HJ's Whoppers are awful. I have gone over to MCD Classic Angus burgers :-). Same for Starbucks here. Coffee is just badly made. It's not the bean nor the blend. It's the technique. Anyone who kills an Americano by filling up to the brim with luke warm water clearly knows nothing about coffee. It's terribly inconsistent. Again it's not the raw materials, it's the lack of attention to detail and inability to get every cup out to a consistently high standard.

Yeah and Domino's is not consistent despite their special camera to check the pizza. Clearly their AI needs an update :p.

    • am I the only one who thinks that AI shit is the first step to automate pizza making and get rid of people altogether?

      • No, it's a way to tie it to KPIs and penalise franchisees if corporate thinks their pizzas aren't up to some nebulous standard. Probably also to allow corporate to point at a picture of a pizza to force franchises to reimburse them for refunding customers if the customer complains to customer service too.

Corporate doesn't care about automating pizza making etc because Dominos doesn't actually make pizzas. Dominos is a well oiled advertising machine that happens to let pizza shops borrow its name and technology.

It's due to their business model in Australia. They have taken the approach of keeping costs ultra low and passing on those cost savings to price their pizzas as low as possible.

It has worked very very well for them as they are making a ton of money (well head office is, the franchisees not so much) and their share price on the ASX has skyrocketed and the CEO is worth like $200m!.

The downside is that pizza quality is very very poor but Australians don't seem to care as the price is so very cheap compared to other pizza outlets.

  • Pizza Hut is actually just as bad in the US. I agree with you generally though. Although one Dominos Pizza I do like is the big New Yorker one. Different dough I think, so makes the difference.

i like coscto pizza in the US

  • Pizza is dirt cheap in Australia. When I was living in the UK, it shocked me at first how expensive pizza is over there.

My local domino's is great. Move to a less shit suburb.

  • Just found out why Dominos is so popular. A new Pizza (not a chain, but a couple of stores in Australia) place popped up near me, so I though I'd try it. Over one and a half hours later and they lose my order.

  • Pizza Hut heard you OP and they've made a collab with TMNT. Looks gross but I'm gonna eat it.
