Entry Level Video Camera for Professional Videography

Hi All,

I have experience in video editing (mainly using Adobe premier and cyberlink power director) and have a passion on videography. I’m thinking of starting videography as a side gig and looking for an entry level video camera. I don’t want to invest significantly as I’m not sure whether I will get many opportunities. Can you please suggest a suitable camera for my situation? Thanks in Advance.

  • Gp Pro?

  • You want a A7 ii

I think 1.5k+ is hardly entry level. Might be a bit steep for a side gig.

It actually is entry level for videography. You also need to add the lenses. That's before you even get into the sound and lighting side.

      • I don't think $1.5k is 'steep' for videography. If you want people to hire you then having some decent/appropriate gear is a must.

The A7 ii will actually reduce your costs elsewhere because it is sensor stabilised, so you can get away with a cheaper lens or not needing a good rig. It also doubles as a good camera too with excellent auto focus so you could essentially double your services with a single camera. Also resell value is rock solid because it is in demand, so if the side-gig doesn't work out then you can always sell it for close to what you bought it for or upgrade to a more serious kit.

Having said that, there are plenty of good quality used A7 ii cameras on Ebay for maybe <$1k with the stock lens.

    • @plmko I’m willing to invest 1.5-2k as justified by many reasons by you . However, would this record 4K videos? I’m pretty sure clients require 4K videos these days

What's significant in terms of investment? You can use anything really as skill, technique and editing accounts for a lot but most will be using a full frame mirrorless with lenses to match requirements but that's just the start. Mics and other gear to record audio, various lighting, tripods and other supports etc all play a very significant part.

  • Depending on what type of videography you're doing, if you already have a flagship phone with a good camera then all you might need is a gimbal and shotgun mic?

  • Panasonic Lumix had a camera that got rave reviews for its video capabilities. Was the G something.

Need some more details: Budget, type of production etc.

If you have perfect lighting conditions, you can make professional level videos with an iphone or go pro (newer models).

A second hand full frame mirrorless/Dslr will do leaps and bounds better than phone/go pro with their aperture and low light capabilities.

Then going into high end you have your Sony A7Siii and Black magic etcs. That's getting expensive though.

Also FYI, a big part of the game will be your marketing abilities. After you've made some great videos, getting them out to potential clients is important, and getting those eyes/visits to result in more business. That's a whole other part of the game you'd need to master in this 'gig' economy.
Any one of us could go on airtasker/fiver and get a decent quality video edited at a decent price. What sets you apart from them? What makes your videos better etc?
