WTB Flyscreen door.

Hello,

Parents wanting to leave back door open during summer, but want to keep bugs out.
We've already had flywire screens on windows last year.
The guy who did it took forever to deliver. Wont be using him again.

Wondering if anyone can steer us in right direction?
Are we better off with a store like bunnings, or security door place?
Doesnt need to be security (front door is) will only be open while home.

  • Is there a current screen or security door it will be replacing? Putting on a replacement door yourself isn't too bad, hanging a new one from scratch is somewhat harder. It's not rocket surgery, but there's a definite knack to it!

Over the years I've found hanging doors is a PITA. If it's an initial installation, just do a ring around of local contractors to give you some quotes. There's a lot of competition out there, you'll probably find somebody will throw one up for you cheaper than you could buy it retail from Bunnings. You'll also save yourself a fair bit of time & cursing! ;)

There is a non-evasive version selling on Scoopon ATM for $16 delivered, http://www.scoopon.com.au/melbourne. Only an hour to go but it appears to be the one on the infomercials from TV.

  • probably easy to go to bunnings, Screen doors start from $115ish. Measure the existing door(should be 2040x820) and measure the door frame to see if its square(diagonal to diagonal in both ways), the door frame would be about 2050x827-832. if thats not confusing :) Standard doors are easy and cheap, non standard.. ugh!

    • Bunnings actually have adjustable ones too…not sure of the range of movement, but an option for those that don't wanna bust out the mitre box! ;)

  • Taking a gamble on the scoopon one.

    • And report back lol. I've been wondering about these magnetic fly screens for ages. I think they attach to the door frame with adhesive velcro. I want to know if they work. Have read reviews, and most people's issues are with the length: too long, drags on floor, therefore does not close properly. Also, issues with quality/strength of the mesh itself, and the seams/hems coming undone.

Has anyone seen this kind of thing at Bunnings? Would much prefer to look and feel before purchase.

        Turned up the other day.
Didnt come with any instructions however.

Package included fly screen, which is 2 curtains joined across the top with another piece.
Also includes double sided tape and little tacks.

We started using the double sided tape, but ended up adding thumb tacks all the way around.

For some reason my mum decided to hem the top piece again, so she could put a bamboo rod across. I think originally aimed to hang via 2 hooks.

The top of the curtains dont join, possibly due to my mums hemming. So slight gap there.

But the rest of the curtain works most of the time. Once one of the magnets joins, it pulls the others together and does alright.

Can come and go through it easily enough, but doesnt always close and folds out.

My cat started to scratch at it, and now crawls under it, rather than through it.
The bottom is coming away from the door now, which doesnt help it close.

You get what you pay for, but $16 is quick fix to keep flies out.
My says to spend the momey and get a real door however.

Anyway, not long term solution, but I can keep back door open to let breeze in without bugs swarming into kitchen.
