Storage Options Moving House

We sold our house and are currently looking for a new one, I need to be out of the house in 5 weeks.
We will move into the new house in about 9 - 12 months, so in the interim we have rented a small house (too small to store everything ).

Looking at solution for storage, knowing we will need to move everything again in 9-12 months.

Options I have thought of:-
1. Commercial Storage Site - i.e. Storageking, Wilson etc…
2. Containers - where they store the container for you i.e. Taxibox, Pods etc..
3. Mates house (ruled out)

Any suggestions, advice, recommendations etc appreciated.

Look at what furniture you absolutely must keep (really really expensive, or heirloom from dead relatives, or very sentimental) and what is just normal furniture. Only keep items you absolutely can't bear to throw away. You can try to sell it for a few weeks but at crunch time put it on your local Buy Nothing. Makes a lot more financial sense to do this and then rebuy after you move - storage and two lots of removalists will cost you a couple thousand. You might think your couch is the comfiest one in the whole world and you'll never find another like it, but you will. If you can do this well enough you may fit everything into your new house. Especially if you are good with throwing stuff away before packing into boxes, you can line the bedroom walls with boxes stacked on each other.

  • Thanks Quantumcat, some good advice there.
I should add, the house we are buying has a big shed, so we can store most stuff there once we are there.

Sounds like you've got your work cut out for you 😛 hopefully you can find a solution

If you can find the house you're going to buy in the next five weeks, ask if you can rent it while waiting for settlement, so you can move stuff right away.

Any idea why? Does she not want it wasted (like me) or is there some underlying thing about being her possessions? If it’s only about not wasting, sell or give it away if garbage is not an option. Otherwise you need to try to reduce your stuff somehow, work on being able to throw stuff away.

Moving to a new house with a big shed isn’t going to help. Just means you have more stuff you’ll never use.

Ask owner of new house/neighbours whether they're willing to rent out their garage - say $100 a week for however long, might have some takes. If the first few refuse, ask how much would change their mind and go from there.

    • Good idea, but the problem is, the new house is under lease for another 12m, they are not the owners.

      • Doesn't hurt to ask. I would park on the street / driveway for $100 a week - I park on the driveway for nothing actually.

      • Ask the neighbours
