How to Remove a Concrete Sealant to Restore Steep Concrete Driveway from Being Slippery

Hi their I have recently sealed our exposed aggregate driveway(very steep)with the dulux avista aggregate sealant. It was going all well until it started raining really heavily and then one day I was reversing my car up on the drive way and the car would not go up anymore and sort of got stuck and the slippery floor warning light came on in the car . Now I am wondering if I can do something to make non slippery may be either by removing the sealant or by adding something on the drive way to make it non slippery . Any suggestion from the experts will be greatly appreciated.

Wow your driveway saga doesn't end, must be tired of it by now. Is a 4x4 with grippy A/T tyres an option?

What makes you think a 4x4 AT tyre would give more grip on sealed concrete?

I believe you misread. A 4x4 with grippy at tyres was the suggestion.

Your experience reminds me of my near heart attack a couple of weeks ago. I was reversing into a very steep sloping down driveway of someone offering me something to pickup for free. I had the handbrake on and kept on sliding backwards when I let go of the brakes. I just missed hitting the fence and had to quickly let the handbrake go and floored it to get back up to the street.

The son who witnessed everything told me the neighbors had to get a tow truck to get their car out of their driveway just a couple of days previously!

  • Try resin bound gravel driveway

I'm not familiar with Dulux but usually there's a grip additive (I believe it's just finely crushed glass) you can mix in at the time you're applying the sealant. If you haven't done that I'm not sure if you can just add another coat with the additive. No idea how effective or long lasting it is. Other option is concrete grinder to resurface the concrete and remove the sealant.

    • Thanks mate, is their any chemical option that be used to remove it ?

      • Can sandblast it - big mess though

Sorry, don't know. Suggest contacting Dulux customer service, I'm sure they'd have technical advisors available that could tell you how to proceed.

You might give it a light diamond grind and then do a new topcoat with an anti slip agent (commercial) or DIY with a bag of dry silica sand from Bunnings and sprinkle over the still wet surface and lightly roll in. I have also removed acrylic sealer with 50/50 Acetone / Metho mix, not a nice DIY home job though!!, it might work on your type of sealer.

    • a light diamond grind to an exposed aggregate driveway….. that would just ruin the exposed aggregate. An Acid wash may be required to remove some if not most of the sealant.

  • Xylene is commonly used to remove sealant, but it's a lot of work and IME not very effective. I have no idea if this would work - but I reseal my concrete myself and I can imagine adding another layer of sealant and throwing sand on it while wet may help?? (again - no idea here, just what I'd try)

Definitely contact Dulux. They have a very serious and professional customer helpline.

  • Put some grooves/ruts into it.
Or even small bumps to increase traction.

Depending on how steep your driveway is it might be worthwhile

  • Taking traction control off the vehicle and see if that works.

Sounds like you need an exposed aggregate driveway.

  • Had the same issue

Got a quote for 2.3k for some anti-slip treatment but didn't go ahead. Need to revisit and get some more quotes
