How Often Do You Try out New Dishes

I don't eat out much, so whenever I do, I only go to the restaurants I know and order my favourite dishes only, just to make sure my night is not ruined by some unknown dish. I mean my thinking process is "I want to have some beef ragu tonight", so the dish is decided first and I already know where to get it. If I don't have something in my mind I simply don't eat out. What about you?

Mate I just wash the dishes after using them.
No need to buy new ones just to eat.

    • Yeah I do that too, but my dish washer cleans too well, including those signatures on the dishes, thats why I always have to go back to reorder them.

  • Depends if you eat out as "fuel" (lazy to cook) or eat out to explore… for "fuel", it is comfort food, play it safe.

    • I know right? You want to eat only food you know with good quality only.

I try a new dish where possible but I have been in different multicultural relationships for 20+ yrs. That is 1 reason I don't go out with Australians, I find them bland and boring same as our food. Live life on the edge, buy your favorite and buy an extra.

    • Geez I'm sure you're a real hit with the ladies with all that mild objectification

I find dishes at most restaurants are well used. Buy the lottery if you get a new one. There is probably a market for second hand dishes in the hospitality industry considering the number of closing downs lately.

  • I tend to try new things and regret it, then swear I’ll stick to things Ive tried before. Rinse and repeat

    • Must be curiosity kicking in. Its a pipe dream to have a restaurant willing to swap food for you if you don't like it lol!

    • but they say greatest regrets are not trying new things

  • I don't mind trying new things, but allergies usually gets in the way …

    • Aww, I feel for you, must be like going onto a battlefield full of landmines every eat out for you!

      • Well I know which places are OK and which I should steer away from, but an unexpected allergy attack (I have an allergy to peanuts and apparently pinenuts) when you least expect it really blows chunks (which is what normally happens during my allergy reactions).

That's pretty much every time I cook…it invariably ends up being a new dish

As in you up a level each time and get better and better :)

      • yeah….as long as I am judging it

I try to eat dishes that are difficult to cook at home

    • In another sense, you want food well worth the money, same here!

    • usually if it is a new establishment we have never been to, the food we often order will be different.
    • most people will have a favourite dish that they will order at every place they go, to measure whether they like it or not. much like the schnitzel at the pub..you will rate the pub based on that schnitzel.
  • If there's a risk of your night being ruined by a dish, then you could try going to a better restaurant.

  • If I'm very hungry, I'll go for something familiar. If I'm not hungry (but have to eat anyway*), I'll be a bit more adventurous.

(For those wondering why I eat when I"m not hungry, it's when I catch up with someone over lunch or dinner and it'll be weird for me to just sit there and watch them eat!)

  • Varies over time:

    1. During dating stages, when meeting new people, you end up trying many new dishes/restaurants.

    2. Young kids - not much chance for even eating out.

    3. Whole food plant based diet (currently 2. & 3.) - prefer to make my own food pretty much nearly always, except rare occasions when the family tries something new and they tell me it's good or I go back to familiar favorite (dish and restaurant).

  • It depends on how I feel. If I want my old favorite, I'm not going to order something new. If I'm in the mood for something new…. well I think you get it.
