I rent cars frequently, and ANZ's free rental car insurance means I won't be using my Commbank card to pay for a rental car.

    • What is their excess on claims?

  • be wary of their fuel policy at the time of rental.
I have been stung a couple of times and try not to use them in certain locations due to them having a necessity (in some locations) to pay for a full tank of fuel on hire.

You then have to return it empty, if its not empty you are not reimbursed for unused fuel, and they don't charge fuel at cost.

just ensure you do not have to use the "Full Tank Option"

in Australia I don't know if this is common but I have had this happen twice in different hire locations in Ireland and the UK making their seemingly good price not so good and its only usually stated at the particular locations rental desk.

  • europcar charged us $550 for a scratch on the bonnet of the car, probably caused by some kid who threw a snowball at us in Tasmania since nothing else happened on our trip. We had insurance through the website we booked them through but still had to pay europcar admin costs of $100. Bunch of crooks.

    • Thrifty tried to ping me for damage to the door that was pre existing. I disputed it and made them sift thru their files. They found it but no apology was made.

All I can say is take lots of photos whilst still in their yard, jot down every dent, scratch, dirt and what not on the paperwork at handover.

  • Avoid Europcar, they're spammer, they will overcharge for damages after you returned the rental car, even if the damage wasn't there.

    • I agree. Europcar are scammers.Stay far away.

      • These scammer has been fined by the ACCC for their dodgy practice.

$40 cashback doesn't compensate for the $200 in scams these guys pull on average.
