Shouldn't be if you’re just fitting into a window - any handyman can do it and it just involves drilling and bolting a bracket onto the outside wall and cutting a blank to fit the window gap

Are you modifying a window if the only difference is an AC box is sitting in the open window? You aren't changing the structure or frame as it literally sits on the window sill

Surely the only reason for buying a box aircon these days is to DIY install?
You can even put them in a rental and leave no damage when removed.
You just need a sliding or sash window, a window lock, and cut a wood or plasterboard panel to fill the gap.
Is this even worth the effort to broden it even if it was legit?

I think you are reading too much into it. Just trying to console you, as the major shops/brands in Aus are far pricier. Obvious price error is obvious.
