Mobile VR Headset for Galaxy S9+ ?

Hi all,

Thinking of getting a mobile vr headset for my galaxy s9+, though not too sure which one is best. I have heard the Samsung Gear VR (for Note 8 due to size of S9+) is good, but, with Samsung discontinuing support for it., and Facebook acquiring Oculus, I'm not sure if it's going to be a paper weight &/or whether Facebook would require a FB account to use (due to Oculus tech in the Gear VR?)
I've seen other headsets range from $5 (for cardboard) to $100 mark, though to me, they all seem the same in the ense of a plastic headset that holds a phone. Am I wrong, or is there more to it ?

Suggestions ?

That's pretty much it. The headsets don't contain any electronics, they just let you strap a phone to your face.

They are probably one of the worst ways you can experience VR, not just because of the horrible screen-door effect but also because you don't get any motion controllers nor 6 degrees of freedom. You just passively sit there and watch 360 degree YouTube videos that give you nausea and there aren't that many interactive experiences on the Google Play store.

Gear VR is also discontinued. And all of it's content is permanently deleted so there's no point getting a Gear VR, plus it's also not forward compatible with newer Samsung devices.

    Facebook acquiring Oculus

Facebook already acquired Oculus in 2014. To use any of their current VR headsets (basically, the Quest and Quest 2) you're going to have to use an FB account to use the Oculus software.

True. I thought about getting a PC VR but if I did, I'd want a decent one which unfortunately costs as much as a gaming PC, and I'm not sure if enough content available to make it a worthwhile purcahse.

Oh, damn, that sucks :/. Is content specific to the headset or phone? I someone had a generic-brand headset, are they likely to have limited content compared to name-brand ?

Thanks, that's what I read, but apparently a lot of people were having issues where the FB account would block the headset due to some error. Maybe sorted, but that's main reason I wanted to avoid those.

  • Probably the min for VR you want is PS4 with Move controllers. Anything less is not worth the time IMHO.

I only have the PS3, no PS4. I thought about PC VR but a bit $$$ for me at the moment, at least for the headset I'd like to get.

      • There's also the Oculus Quest 2 but at $600 it's probably out of range too.

      • The best time to pickup a Oculus Quest VR is on Amazon Prime day, that's usually when they get a larger discount and it is usually stackable with cashback promo's (e.g Shopback + Zip pay).

The Quest 2 is the best product currently and is also the cheapest VR headset that you can buy new.
