New Laptop Suggestions Plus Extended Warranty Options

Hi all,

I'm in a last minute rush to purchase a laptop (I procrastinate too much) with the following specs;

Windows laptop
- Intel i7 or AMD Ryzen 7 or higher
- minimum 16gb RAM
- 500gb SSD or higher

Mainly to be used for my studies in Cyber Security

I can see a variety of mainly gaming laptops (I'm not a gamer) via JB Hi Fi and also some on the Dell website - back in the day JB HI Fi Extended warranties were fantastic - however as it's been a long time since I've purchase new tech I'm not sure how this compared to the support Dell offers??

Any specific laptop recommendations welcome, I'm hoping to get a few years out of the laptop - not too fussed on price but prefer under $2k and 15" screens. Max budget is $3k.

  • I know I've got a couple of friends who get the JB extended warranties and swear by them. They absolutely abuse them to get the most bang for their buck with no issues whatsoever.

    • On computers or other goods?

They let me exchange my old ipod for a brand new one up to the amount I spent on the first, was like a free upgrade hehe

        Everything including computers.

    • How do you 'abuse' the warranty?

Go in right near the end with some problem, they don't sell the laptop anymore, they Replace with a new model.

Microsoft Surface /Dell XPS / Lenovo ThinkPad X1 they all good. But for Intel i7/16gb RAM 500gb SSD.. now that would be a problem for the $2k price point.
There is no such a thing as 'future proof' in IT. In future, buy a newer one.

    • What price range would the specs fall into? JB Hi Fi has them between $1700-2000 & current Dell sale seems very decent ($3k laptop for $1,700 1TB and specs as above)

      • You got $2k, so check in JB anything that closer to that price, short list to two or three, then post it here. People will comment?

          • @blueyez: Look like you into 15", now narrow it down to top two. You not playing games, so budget of $2k is enough.

Probably to compile a java code ? $1500 laptop is enough lol

Don't even need extended warranty, after two years buy an another one 🤷

    • Surface definitely won't be $2K for OP's specs requirement. $3K is more likely.

Source: my 15" Surface Laptop 3 with 16GB and 512GB was $2750 with 20% off at JB Hi-Fi when I bought it in July

      • I don't mind going over $2k however my card with price protection was reduced to $2k and I'm unsure if I can bump it up last minute (or even overpay so it has more than $2k available, as that will take time to clear)

        • Apparently Surface Laptop 4 will be out very soon; I like my Laptop 3, but with that information, probably wouldn't go and buy one unless you can get more than 20% off.

Dell and Lenovo provide onsite warranty with their business laptops, and with certain upgrades to their support you can go from 1 year to 3 years for around $200 extra. Sometimes the extended warranty is already bundled with the product you're buying — the Thinkpad T15 $2024 from Shopping Express I looked at for example already comes with 3 year onsite wrty and there's no need to purchase it as extra.

Warranties can be either onsite or depot. Onsite means they come to you to fix the laptop, depot means you ship the laptop out for repairs.

At JB HIFI, by default all Computers over $500 are covered for 2 Years (from date of Purchase) under what they call a voluntary warranty period. Then they offer you two types of extended care warranties for extra $$$

    1. Replacement cover plan (addon) which is an on-the-spot replacement for electrical failure but this is only for products up to $1000

    2. The Repair cover plan which can cover your device up to 4 years. If they can't fix your device within a month they'll replace it and they also give you a loaner device if the repair takes more than 10 days.

Note you also have to consider accidental damage which isn't going to be covered.

The trade off is that the extended warranty at JB isn't cheap, it can add a few hundred dollars to the purchase price of the item which might make it more expensive than buying the laptop from Dell or Lenovo themselves.

    • Yeah kinda on the fence as JB didn't have much stock for what I was after at all =(

  • On the Lenovo education store you can get a lenovo ideapad Slim 5i 14" with i7, 16gbs of ram at 3200mhz, and 512gb SSD for <$1170?. The only issue with it really is the 45%NTSC screen and the battery life is reported to only be 6 hours. Otherwise, a pretty good deal imo.
