Switching Mobile from Optus

Hi fellow bargainers,

I am currently on Optus but thinking of switching to either Vodafone or a third tier provider.

I have a 5g phone but do not use 5g that often as the connection can be spotty. I want to move to Voda with the recent promotions. However my last experience with them dates from 2014 and the network at the time was not brilliant.

What can you tell me of your recent experience with Voda? Or other third party providers? I do not want to spend more than $40 per month but will also like reliability. 5g will be the cherry on top

  • Voda sucked for me. Unusable speeds in a major Sydney suburb to the point where some texts with pictures didn't load. Meanwhile Optus has reliable 4G and Telstra has reliable 5G in the same area.

    Left within a month.

    • Good to know. Thank you 👍🏾

  • +1

All three networks suck in various areas. I suggest checking out woolies and coles catalog for SIM cards that are on special and check out which network they use and grab ONE Telstra and one Vodafone and try them where you need them to see hot they go.

Is is usually cheaper to use a MVNO. A list of MBNO's is on the following page, but check with the MVNO before you buy a SIM as they sometimes change networks:

    • Good idea. Will be worth it. Thank you

  • If you want to test out the Vodafone network check out Felix mobile https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/612508

    • Thank you. Félix looks good. How did you find coverage and reliability?

      • I live in Newcastle which is a 2 hour drive from north Sydney. I’m finding the coverage to be pretty good I get 4G almost all the time and the connection to be really reliable. I’ve been using Optus 4G for the last 12 months and would say it has been a decent improvement.

        • Good man. I'm going to give it a try. Did you port your number at first or used a new number?

          • @Raj09: I’ve got it setup in dual sim mode on my iPhone 12 I have an Optus E-sim. I ordered a new number because my Optus service doesn’t expire till next year.

            • @Joshminey: Cool. Can you have a esim from Félix? Or is it normal microsim?

              • @Raj09: You can only have a microsim they don't support E-sim at this stage

                • @Joshminey: Sounds good. I'll give them a shot. If not happy I can always go back to optus. I've got a month to month with optus.
