Insurance for Vehicle Transport.

I'm in the process of purchasing a vehicle from interstate. The dealer is arranging for the vehicle to be transported via their carrier. The vehicle will be unregistered.

When I enquired about obtaining insurance for the car, I was informed it will be covered by the car carriers insurance, while in transit. Does anyone have experience with this and would you like to comment?

Thanks!

if your concerned just get comprehensive on the vehicle from date of purchase instead of the date you receive it. Insurers will happily cover as long as in roadworthy condition (doesn't need to be rego'd, just needs to be able to pass based on face value). As long as it isn't a complete shit/rust box or a shell you'll be fine. just mention that the car isnt registered and provide a VIN. Contact them once rego'd and update deets.

Lets budget it takes 2 weeks to arrive, so youll be paying about 4% of the annual premium while you wait. Most insurance products are at most $2000, so you'd be out at most $80 but have peace of mind in case the couriers insurance is crap, or something happens that their insurance won't cover

  • Great advice JD, the vehicle only has 8000k's on it, so definitely road worthy.

Had tried a couple of online quotes, but all needed a rego number…..might have to go old school and make a phone call.

    • You dont, u can manually select the vehicle.

  • What did your carrier say when you asked them what their insurance covers?

    • As I posted above, it's not my car carrier.

      • So what did the dealer say about their car carrier?

        • As I posted above, I was informed it will be covered by the car carriers insurance, while in transit.

On the sales contract, insert a clause/additiona condition, purchase price covers vehicle to be shipped to xxxx, insured at purchase price.

I had my car carried from Melbourne to Brisbane and back 6 months later. Both times the paint work was destroyed by straps and stone chip damage. Both times I had to get the car resprayed. Carrier tried to get out of paying for the damage both times. Do what you need to to protect your purchase. The car is just a "thing" to most dealers.
