Ideas for Where to Go within WA from Perth as a Solo Traveller

I'm spending Easter break and possibly extending another week to 'wfh' and spend more time in Perth as I haven't been there in over 10 years

Due to being majorly distracted by my work and studies I haven't had a chance to jump onto any tours for the Easter break so I'll just have to wing it for that weekend

As I'm travelling solo I'm looking for ideas where I could go, was thinking Rottnest Island and possibly venturing into the caves at Margaret River

Not sure where to base myself for the days I need to work (reliable internet and a desk mandatory for the days I'm working) if anyone has any suggestions on a good base to potentially explore after work hours, doesn't need to be in Perth CBD itself. I tend to be a more budget traveller as I have a few domestic trips this year I can't afford to break the bank lol

I'll land 1st April before 12pm and am free the whole Easter long weekend, will work 6th-9th April during business hours and have an extra weekend to explore (however potentially flying out Sunday which needs to be factored in)

Suggestions on where to go, what to do, and also how to get there (am fine with public transport) would be muchly appreciated as locals tend to know better (please don't kill me as I'm from VIC lol!)

I can drive but hiring a car solo might be too expensive

Definitely check out Rottnest Island, the forecast for the next week is going to be amazing (high 20's / 30's), so defintely check that out, go for a swim/snorkel. You can hire a bike for the day but it depends what you want to do, if it's just swim / snorkel then you can get some good enough places in walking distance. I would probably avoid the long weekend though, but the bookings for people who are staying there would be for a week, but you'd more avoid the day travellers.

It depends on what you find interesting, but the amount of wineries / craft breweries down south is unreal. So many hidden gems or well known estates.

Yallingup / Dunsborough has some unbelievable coastine - I absolutely love Meelup Beach.

In Freo there's little creatures and a few great places for some fish + chips, if you're into your footy you could check out a game at Optus Stadium too.

Check out here for some inspiration for restaurants / things to do too:

  • Rottnest Island is definitely doable as a solo traveller. If you're like me and your bike skills are appalling, you can use a hop on, hop off bus service to get around the island.

I also enjoyed Kings Park and Freo when I visited in 2019.

Warning: if you thought a myki card at $7 was a rip, wait until you see how much WA charge for a SmartTraveller (or whatever their public transport reloadable card is called)

Smartriders are only $10 + $10 min load fee, so not too different, except the system always works which is convenient.

Rotto would be good for a day trip, accomodation would be booked out by now unfortunately.
Margaret river and Dunsborough are good, however again would be booked out/heinously expensive due to covid tax. Although there's a few bush camping spots which are nicely placed.

Maybe Kalbarri if perth's colder, else albany if it's warmer.

But yeah the sky's the limit.

      • myki cards are $7. Opal cards are free. MetroCard is $5. So I wasn't too pleased, as a NSW resident, when I saw a SmartRider was $10.

VIC and NSW also allow mobile tapping/touching on (so you don't have to pay $7 for a myki if you have an Android) and in the case of NSW, you can also use your contactless card, unlike WA (unless things have changed since late 2019).

Visit spackbace at the Toyota dealership.

Test drive a car up to Monkey Mia.

  • If you can drive then you can goto pinnacles in the morning and spend rest of the afternoon in the sand dunes at Lancelin. Guilderton is also quite nice.

    • There's a tour that covers both Pinnacles and Lancelin, I will lock it in as my final tour!

  • To echo some of the comments above most reasonable accommodation would be booked out by then, as it is also the start of the school holidays.

My wife and I thought we would go away for a couple of nights and tried out luck and the only two options we found were backpackers or very expensive AirBNB listings.

As suggested, if you have access to a car there are plenty of places you could drive to - expecting them to all be busy though:

South - Margaret River, Dunsborough region
North - Lancelin (although not really a fan)
East - York have Easter fairs / antique markets on Easter weekend and may be worth checking out if it is your thing
    Central - Fremantle

Any of these can easily be done in a done (or more).

I did a winery tour with Swan Valley tours and it was amazing / have never drunk so much wine so fast, felt like speed wine tasting 😂😂😂

Did Rottnest island today, regret hiring a bike over the bus, was very exhausted in the heat even after taking a dip!!

I'm planning to book a tour that covers the Pinnacles and the sand dunes in Lancelin.

Have a full day tomorrow but unsure what to do next. Have visited Fremantle and the markets and nightlife.

Was thinking maybe to go to Cottesloe but don't know if that's full day worthy?

As much as I'd love to do yet another wine tour I think my liver can't handle that again!
