Reminder - Platinum Edge Travel Credit Expires Tomorrow 30/3

Just a reminder that anyone who has a Platinum Edge card and has a travel credit extension from last year, they expire tomorrow.

No idea how to use mine. Interstate flights are way over inflated at the moment. Tried to find accommodation for an intrastate getaway, but there is basically nothing in SA.

Any ideas if there is anything that can be booked that can be cancelled etc?

I called AMEX and they said no chance of getting an extension on the credit.

risk it , book Brisbane over Easter, hope it get cancelled and u get credit (prolly another year)

    • Not a bad idea. If Qantas cancel you can get a refund. But pretty sure we can still cancel it and just get a credit. Need to work out the latest you can cancel a flight (hoping Qantas do it first).

  • Some people say book a Qantas flight and hope it gets a schedule/time change and that allows you to cancel and get a refund.

I’m not sure if that will work.

Book a hotel with a generous cancellation terms ?

    • Also a good idea. Any ideas of which hotels have this? (Cancellation resulting in a refund ?)

  • OP: Thanks for the reminder. I have completely forgotten about the Travel Credits.

Just logged in to check my Travel Credits, and sure enough it is there, and will expire not on 30/03, but on 31/03.

    $200 Travel Credit Extension
Your Travel Credit expires Wed, 31/03/21

    • It should be based on the card anniversary date, not the same for everyone.

      • Anniversary date normally, but due to Corona they extended all 2020 expiry dates until 31/3/21 (which actually expires at midnight aest 30/3). So many will be today.

    • Amex do things differently. On the phone she said to use it by the 30th, as on the 31st it will be expired and disappear. Ie. The wording apparently is 'Use before the 31st'. Weird, but this did happen to me last time..so I will 100% be using them today.

      • I was told the same.

The expiry date means it disappears on the expiry date itself. Really bizarre definition.

So in the case of 31/3 expiry, it should be used 11:59pm on 30/3

        • Anyone able to confirm if travel credits are still available to use today ?

  • Well, no availability for anything I looked up. Flights are way more expensive than normal.

So anyone know of a hotel with a 100% cancellation policy? or a site that has a good summary of hotel chains?

Don't care where it is, I'll just book it and cancel straight away. Got no other choice.

    • Cancellation policies don't say much…

Cancellations after 24hrs prior to arrival will incur a $25 charge. Assume this means outside of this will be no charge.

      And

How does a cancellation of a travel credit work?

*Edit - looks like if you cancel the travel, the credit is forfeited / lost. So no use making a random hotel booking. Need to book a flight and hope the airline (not you) cancel it.

  • **Edit - Just found another section of Amex's website that says "If the trip you booked is eligible for an Airline or Supplier refund, we will refund any form of payment including any Travel Credit and/or Membership Rewards points (excluding any airline/supplier cancellation fees). Travel Credits and Membership Rewards points are usually non-refundable forms of payment but given the exceptional circumstances, these are being refunded at this time."

Which totally contradicts AMEX's FAQ's that say all travel credit cancellations are forfeited and all changes incur a $55 fee

Which is it AMEX?? Also in the above, what is a 'supplier'? is a "supplier" a hotel / car hire?

Then looked up Virgin's cancellation policy. It says there are no fees if flights are cancelled AND then changed or placed into credit (QFF apparently still charge change fees if you cancel into a flight credit, so I guess you just rebook, which says is a $20 fee….from the link that just said there are no fees??).

Now back to Virgin, it says if you cancel for a full refund, fare rules fees may still apply. What on Earth can you make of these fare rules

    Is that even English?

I'm going to have to wait for tomorrow as there are too many contradictions, and not enough current availability to book anything I was looking for (hotels or flights).

  • *** Final Edit - Amex have outdone themselves as you can't even log on to the Amex travel booking site for bookings with a travel credit. Got a screenshot of the site being down if anyone needs it.

  • Anyone know how to book two one way flights on one flight credit? ie Virgin one way and Qantas return?

Gave up. Tried booking just all Virgin. But the fare choice buttons get all jumbled when trying to checkout and the base line getaway fare button gives you the highest value elevate total fare. Using a desktop (I tried chrome and safari) and they are both a mess. Screenshotted.

    Amex has gone downhill.

  • Tried to get some form of credit or discount on the yearly fee, feel a little cheated that it expired on me.

    • They wont budge on things like this (unless you made contact prior). I had a credit extended for 1 month, but I did ring about it earlier. If not, just need to leave.

      • Yeah I should have made a note about it expiring , so many things been upside down for awhile now it was the last thing on my mind. Not sure what I would replace my platinum edge if I did leave.
