Advice Needed - Buying a Mattress

Hi,

A few stores around my neck of the woods are having a sale on a queen size mattress. I'm thinking about getting one for myself this weekend as the current mattress I have is over ten years old and, I'm starting to have trouble sleeping because of the wear.

I'm thinking about spending around the $800-1000 mark. The current mattress I've got is on the softer side. I think the mattress is a tad too soft for my liking. So I'm leaning towards something that has a medium feel. I don't want one that I need to flip around each month.

The current bed is on an ensemble and, I'm thinking about using the existing ensemble just for now, till I get more money for a bed frame and a couple of new bedside tables. Would this affect the overall feel of the new mattress?

So a bit about myself. I'm currently single and using this mattress for myself only. I'm around 6 foot and about 98kg. I'm a side sleeper. However, I do use my laptop and watch tv lying on my back.

Is there anything else I need to look out for when I'm buying a mattress?

Any help will be great.

Bevmarks sell the mattress used at Crown and they’re extremely comfortable.

  • I'm also looking for a new mattress, but have a slightly higher budget. I went to several stores and researched online, now I'm more confused than ever lol.

Apparently the Sealy Posturpaedic Elevate is a decent value for money for around $1200.

I'm tempted to order a mattress in a box and return it if I'm not satisfied:

    • I bought a queen mattress from SR about a month ago (got it for $1099 using a random code I found on a review site) and it’s a really comfortable mattress. Heavy as though!

Whatever you do, do not pay full price. Find what you want and wait for a sale. You can often get 40-50% off.

I'm looking at getting a mattress at bevmarks since they are having a 50% off sale all mattresses at the moment

  • Try Sleeping Duck

  • I have a medium firm Ikea one and its great

  • Yes…we all spend 1/3 of our lives on a mattress so we need to invest in the best quality for that amount of time spent

  • Don’t waste your money.
Get a mattress in a box eg. Ecosa, sleeping duck etc. with amazing return policies.

    • Can't find one decently priced which is not super firm…

  • How did you go?
I have a Sealy bed and ensemble that's now >10 years old, and now has 2 dips/grooves thanks to me (we rotate, but it still compressed) and there is a bump in the middle.
Was thinking if I can reuse the base and just buy a new mattress, but the only information I can find about the Sealy base is that it is Microtek (obviously marketing faff).
Interested to hear what you have done.

    • I Ended up going to Bevmarks and getting myself a mattress for around $800 + delivery ($80 times like this, I wish I had a ute lol).

I chose this one since it felt right when I lay down on it. I almost fell asleep instantly.

I'm still waiting for it to arrive, the sales lady told me that I have to wait for four weeks, due to a backorder. I'm either going to buy a new frame and bedside table by the time my new mattress arrives or inherit my folks old beside and frame. Either way, it's unlikely I would be using the base or, should I do, it will be only for a short period.

In terms of using your base, I think most cases are ok to use an existing bed base. Unless at the time of sale, the salesperson tells you that you can't use a different bed base or the manufacture, illustrate to you that you need to use their bed base to avoid voiding your warranty, then your covered under Australian Consumer Law. Personally in most cases, you should be fine
