Will You Let The Yellow Cars in?

So there's this scenario that annoys me a lot. Having lived near a busy shopping centre I experience this almost daily.

So say traffic is heavy and you're the green car. The traffic light just turned green and you are in a SUV and will also be the only car that made it across the intersection.

You noticed there are 2 cars behind (orange) also followed your and wait across the intersection since the light just turned green.

You see there's congestion ahead but after like a minute the traffic in front of you (red car)move and you now have a gap.

Will you then:

A- let the 1 or 2 yellow cars in or
B- you drive up so the 2 orange car behind you can clear the intersection? This assume you notice them in the first place.

Mandatory Ms Paint drawing

Personally I do B. Can't be that courteous when there's people behind blocking the intersection.

green had not cleared the intersection
but no, don't let yellow in and cause further issues

If you are Green, you shouldn't enter an Intersection that isn't clear.

The Yellow cars are not your problem either. They should obey and remain behind the Solid White Line.

    • +3

I've been the green car many times waiting behind the solid white line for a solid 5-6 cycle of light without clearing the intersection because there is no shortage of yellow car. The moment a gap appears, a yellow car would pull out resulting in the green car being the one blocking traffic. These day I just join the yellow car brigade.

    • I'd say green has (just) cleared the intersection so its the two orange cars that are the douchebags in this scenario.

I'd say green has (just) cleared the intersection

Tell that to any person trying to cross that crossing in a wheelchair, or a person who is blind trying to navigate it.

If it's a 4WD, I ain't letting them in. I like to see, be around polite drivers and maintain safety.

A wise friend told me that if i let them in, I might cause an accident.

you are in a SUV and

    What is the relevance here?

    • All car are belong to OP.
      Superior coming through!

    • OP is the SUV.

OP’s backseat driver and OP opinions does not agree.

OP post in OzB to settle dispute.

Yellow cars have a stop line, they wait. The orange cars are not your concern.

  • +2

There should be a MS Paint™ toolbox Colour Wheel to mix the Green, Yellow, Orange and Red according to who collides with who. lol

  • Not if there are people in the intersection behind you, no.

Merging is all about the zipper…. You merge like a zipper and your problem is solved.

    • +8

The problem is, this is not a zipper merge lane, it’s a slip lane with a stop line. People behind the stop line need to stop and give way, not jam their car in.

      • +1

Agreed, but if the traffic has banked back like the OP is saying, then you should merge like a zipper. But if the traffic is flowing, then yeah they have to wait.

        • +3

No zipper. Doesn’t matter how long the line is, stop line says “no zipper, wait your turn until it is clear.” If people are going over the stop line and trying to push in and zipper, they are not giving way which is exactly what the stop line says they must do.

But I agree… depends on how traffic is going would depends if I was benevolent enough to allow a car to sneak through in front of me.

    • -1

      it’s not a merge lane

      • -1

When its 'congested' and traffic is stopped as in the OP example, the nice thing to do is allow traffic to merge. We are not talking free flowing traffic here.

        • +1

"You should…." and "it would be nice" are completely different things. Just because it's a nice thing to do, doesn't mean you should or have to, you're implying you have to merge like a zipper.

          • @Ughhh:

Just because it's a nice thing to do, doesn't mean you should or have to, you're implying you have to merge like a zipper.

Just remember that when you're facing that stop sign and the traffic is banked back and won't allow you in.

The fact is, all those saying you don't have to give way, would see if differently if they are the ones facing the stop sign and no one would let them out when the traffic is banked back.

It happens in many places, there is a couple of intersections I go through every morning the traffic is banked back for blocks leading up to them. The 'nice' thing to do is allow the cars out of the side streets or I could take your view and let them sit there for an hour for the traffic to clear, as you know know, they have to give way to us.

            • @JimmyF: You're assuming that I never let anyone in, and I've never been in the situation where I am in yellows car.

I've never stated what I do, rather corrected your implication that you are required to merge like a zipper.

Making assumptions based on made up rules ie. assuming the other car will give way to you, can get you into an accident.

  • I typically let cars in, but if there is a queue behind me blocking the intersection I probably wouldn’t.

I prefer to keep all traffic flowing where possible. Eg there is a side road near home where the main road has a long steady stream of traffic at peak hrs. I usually check ahead and slow enough to leave a gap for a car or two to turn right into the side road (across my path). Sometimes it also lets a car turn left into ‘my’ lane, but not big deal. It’s just one more car in a long queue. Costs me nothing as I quickly catch up to cars in front but means they don’t wait for ages and potentially take a risky move.

  • Is one of them a ute or a souped up VW Golf…cos if so i aint letting them in

  • +1

    Spotto!

  • I have a weird friend that is the green car on the freeway in the left lane where onramp cars merge, he straight away indicates his left signal but continues straight. I wonder if this applies to this scenario too. Because I use to ride a 125cc bike (also own a 1137cc bike) and 10% of drivers that are the yellow car toot at me to stop and let them zip merge. I no longer ride not because of this but it was a problem.

    • +1

Responsibility is on the merger but everything goes better if you let them merge. Imagine stop and go traffic and literally no one let you in, you'd be sitting there forever. This is why some people are so aggressive with the butt-in.

  • You are confusing as your intersection. What green car, what orange car what are you trying to say?
