1995 Celica ZR Engine Issues

I recently put a K&M pod filter in my 95 Celica ZR, the first day of driving it was great.

Next day whilst I was driving the engine died, and came back on a couple seconds later. I pulled over and the car wouldn't start for a couple minutes, and the engine bay smelt of heavy petrol. It eventually started with very low revs and I managed to get it going normal. It had been about a week of no issues, the occasional check engine light, and today after a bit of a long drive, it wouldn't start again, and the same situation happened.

The air temp sensor was moved to a different spot, that's my best best. I wanna get some other thoughts on this cause, I'm by no means a car expert.

Just put the original air filter back on and see how she runs.

Why did you swap it? Induction noise?

Probably running too lean or rich. The poor little engine is confused by your mod.

    • Induction noise?

      If it was a GT-Four…

Welcome to the old Toyota helpline…

Your call is important to us… Please hold…

  • It had been about a week of no issues, the occasional check engine light, and today after a bit of a long drive, it wouldnt start again, and the same situation happened.

I see the problem you failed to check the engine.

    Check engine light = issue

  • I had some experience with my Toyota Celica GT-Four around the High Speed Ring on Turismo 1.
Never really gave me any issues!

  • Try OBD scan with BlueDriver Bluetooth scan tool. It will not only tell you what the issue is but also show video tutorials on how to fix it. Any other could be fine too.

  • Check if the Bad Obsession Motorsport crew can help? They swapped a Celica GT-4 engine into a Mini, so presumably have a spare engine to swap in the other direction?

Ep. 1 here, and a little more about them and Project Binky here.

/sarcasm aside, some of their engine rebuild eps later in the series would likely provide good foundational knowledge for the OP, and are also entertaining.

  • As a car expert…40yrs… Put it back to original.

If problem persists, go see an expert.

If problem goes away, now you are 1 step closer to being an expert.

    Then go see an expert.

  • K/N filters do aide throttle responsiveness but they don't actually add any power unless the car is tuned for it , just more induction noise.

A questionable gasoline odor coming from your car is an indication of a leak. The most likely culprits are a fuel injection line or fuel tank vent hose.

Let us know how you go OP
