28 Degrees and Go Mastercard Scam Text

FYI card holders

Got an SMS twice that says

The security code to complete your online purchase with your Latitude 28 Degrees Global Platinum Mastercard is 924241. Please enter this into the space provided

No I hadn't requested an online purchase.

Rang Latitude and a recorded message says that this is a scam and to forward to an number (that was said too fast for me to decipher) and then delete. Have just deleted it.

Curious on how this works (the number is underlined)?

And my curiosity is also into, do they have my card number or is it just random. And again how do they know about my 28 Deg account possession or is that again random?

and also alerting others.

    Thanks for the PSA.

  • Probably

Security/data breach at a retailer, or with an account linked to the card, that you've used?
      Might just be random.

      • Interesting, its only used at Aliexpress or PayPal

  • Thanks for posting the verification code, I can now complete the transaction..

My pleasure,🤦🏻, 😂😂, but wait,✋ you forgot, that it was you who sent this to me so you'd have it already. 🙏

  • I got the same thing this morning but no link..

  • I got it yesterday and called up. They said their fraud team was still investigating

    Doesn't sound very reassuring

  • I also received the same sms yesterday. Waited to report it on their chat line. I was number ‘93 in the queue. Half an hour later I was told it was a scam and to delete it. There were no links to click on so I don’t know what benefits the scammers hope to achieve?

  • Got one a day or two ago.
Thought it was a scam, checked my card activity and no sign of anything wierd, so ignored it.

  • I got mine this morning, I agree the message that greats you is terrible, I don't see how its a scam though as its source is the same as any other request they send.. I have checked my account with no strange activity..

  • There are three reasons for this:

Stupid software has race conditions (way more common than you'd expect)

Someone has your mobile on their account

Someone is trying to make a purchase using your card on a 3D secure payment page.

Financial places lie all the time, it wouldn't suprise me if someone (profanity) up pushed buggy software and to cover it up the corp is calling it scam SMS.

Yes thats a possibility, as it seems only Latitude cards so far. Scottys Citibank example seems to be linked to other fraudulent activity, in my case and it, seems like that for others, there is no activity pending even after a few days.

100% I called up on Friday when I got the first of two SMS.
"Yes, we know it about, it's a problem with the system. Just ignore it." was the response.

        Plus e-mail from them today…
"We've done a recent security check of your Latitude 28° Global Platinum Mastercard® account which may have resulted in you incorrectly receiving an SMS."

  • Received the same sms today.
Called but its was a long queue so hanged up.
Do we need to cancel the card and get a new card number?

The Mrs' card received similar text messages over the last couple of days (Citibank Mastercard) and it turned out someone did tried to use her card to make online purchases. There were multiple small transactions in Philippines Peso (between A$1 to $5 paying for apps on Google Play Store) that were easy to miss due to small amount. Ended up having to get a replacement card.

    So,

    • do check your statement for suspicious transactions
    • call the number on your bank/credit card provider's website, rather than the number in the SMS, just in case it's a fishing/scam message
  • I received this same scam yesterday at 1:45am. Surely I wasn’t sleep shopping.

Not entirely sure what this scam is used for? There’s not even a place where you can use this code to phish for.

Usually this text security challenge is used for you to fill out on the spot when you make a purchase where the credit provider deems at risk of fraud (amount, vendor, differing spending patterns).

  • I received the same sms (different security code) yesterday.

Have not had a 28 Degrees card since 2016.

Also not sure how this scam/phishing would work

    • Probably replaying SMS since 2015🤣

  • thought paypal was hacked years ago, and was this info scraped from facebook posts?

I have 28D but didn't receive any SMS, and have zero recent activity on my account.

  • My card is already blocked as I tend to not use it unless overseas, but also received the text. Sounds like maybe their database got hacked spamming us with texts. I tried to contact them via chat but it would disconnect each time so i gave up contacting them.
