Best Time to Buy Newly Released Cars?

Hi, I am looking at getting the 2021 Kluger which is due to be released mid-year.

I am in no hurry to pull the trigger and wanted to get any advice on when to dive in to get value. I'm assuming if I purchase on release there will be no discounting but not sure when it would start to be discounted. For example, New Year sales or end of financial year sale… I imagine the further away from the release date the better price can be.

Thanks in advance for any help. Also, any other pointers on purchasing the car are appreciated.

Cheers.

when the later is released ie the 2022 model, get the second hand of 2021.

In about 6 years when all the 5 year leases are expired.

  • Given manufacturers have been restricting supply it's likely there'll be a 3 - 6 month wait so factor that in to when you want it.

    • Cheers, we'll keep it in mind.

You couldn't pick a worse time to buy a new car.

Imports are down, demand is up, discounts are down, and prices are up.

There a waiting period for many new cars of 6 months and more.

There's a shortage of chips available which are essential for modern cars.

If I was in the market for a new car and wasn't desperate I'd be waiting until at least the end of this year.

    • Thanks for your insights.

It's never been a better time to get a new car, because used one are asking for crazy money. Either the seller is delusional, or the buyer (of the used car) forgotten about stamp duty.

Doubt things will go back to normal by year end - the supply shortage will continue over the next 6 months. Early to mi next year is the best bet when supply is back to normal as well people start to travel again.

So, either now, or mid next year.

So pay more (limited discounts) and wait longer for a new car? It’s not a good time to buy any car.

New model Camry Hybrid came out December 2017 - Hasn't had a promotion/sale (petrol had about a $750 discount at one point)
    New model RAV4 came out May 2019 - Hasn't had a sale
    Hybrid C-HR came out December 2019 - Hasn't had a sale

In fact, all 3 of these have only gone up in price since they launched, for various reasons (model updates, exchange rates, etc etc)

Based on these, it's safe to say the Kluger won't see a sale any time soon (certainly no EOY or EOFY sales), and if anything will see long waiting times and then price increases in 12 months or so.

Buy it on launch, enjoy it.

I thought I was disagreeing with the earlier comments….. but what he said!

  • Generally, don’t buy the first generation of a new model. Wait for them to iron out a few bugs with the first facelift.

(I have no interest in kluger’s So don’t know if this is a completely new model or just a facelift of the current shape)

Bit of both, but it's using architecture that's pretty well proven already. None of the newer cars have really had issues straight off, that weren't rectified with a recall

      • Toyotas are generally okay.

      • I don't know, Car Advice recons your pay master's pay master took four and a half years to fix those DPF's that made me soo much money a few years back from former Toyota owners. :P

        • Haha. It definitely a stain mark for Toyota. Having said that, the family ML diesel had clogs at multiple part of the engine in its 8th year. Bad enough that the mechanic to say dont bother with it.

          • @[Deactivated]: Every maker has their issues.

Toyota just let it go on for too long with out a recall, like Ford and VW did with their automated manual gear boxes, or Holden with the Captiva, or Holden with the Cruse, or Holden with the Colorado Trailblazer (all three sucked in different ways), or Honda or KIA with their sliding doors of death (note: no deaths reported from either brand's automated sliding door), or Isuzu and Mitsubishi with their cabins (to be fair, you should notice them before you purchase), or Mazda and the Euro's with their almost non existent warranties ('our cars are too good to fail, why would we waste money on warrany processes when service people can cross sell'), etc.

  • My opinion is a bit different to above. I would order right away if you want one in the next year or two.

Interest rates are low - as little as 3.5-4% on a secured car loan for a new vehicle.

With demand high, Toyota aren't going to be dropping the prices any time soon. I'd say they will sell at RRP or near it for quite a while (for as long as there is a wait list anyway).

If you pay RRP you may pay a few grand more than you would have to in a couple of years time. But if you are selling your current vehicle you may get all of that back (or more) in the increased second hand car prices currently.

Well specced RAV4s have had a 12 month wait list, so if you are interested get your name down and deposit (subject to your choice of finance so you have a way out if you change your mind).

  • Wait until they release the new MY and just hope there are old stock of the previous model.

  • With covid everything goes out the window. I bought a new car in march, traded in my old 4 year one for a super good price.

When they release the facelift model.

    • This ^^

Obviously if its a new Toyota, every clownshoes NPC wants one.

The only way you get a deal is when its about to be superceded and there happens to ones left on the lot at the end of the month.

Even then you'll have a situation where in many cases, the outgoing model is sought after for some reason…. discontinuing V6 etc.

  • New Kluger is on my possible list.
    Which level you looking at?

I doubt you'll see much price variation from retail for the next 12mths at least.

Curious to see what kind of stock levels there might be initially
Doubt there will be much discount or deals apart from RRP driveway.

    • There's a few already in the country just waiting for June.

Talk to your local dealer about putting your name on one, "subject to satisfactory viewing and test drive" or however you wanna word it.
