Cheapest PAYG VoIP Call Rate to Malta

My mum and her sister (who live in Australia) love calling up their relatives in Malta every few weeks and chatting for hours. In an ideal world they'd all just get phones with Skype or something and chat between each other for free, but they refuse to use a smartphone and want to chat on their landlines (both the Aussie relatives and the Maltese ones).

They've been using a VOIP SIP ATA with Australian Phone Company but their pricing recently changed and now costs more than their TPG landlines (23c/min for TPG, 25.4c/min with APC), so I'm looking into alternatives to get the price down for them as when they spend 3-4 hours on the phone it can cost over $50 for a single call.

What do other people with elderly relatives who like calling overseas do to get cheap calls?

  • spend 3-4 hours on the phone it can cost over $50 for a single call.

If they know the cost, it may change their minds to use their smartphone, tablet or computer.

The cost of a few calls, you can buy them a new smartphone :)

    • Believe me mate, I've tried! Would be so much easier just to get them on Skype or even FaceTime, but they don't wanna - none of them even have mobile phones in the first place, let alone smartphones or tablets. They don't even use a computer for email or anything.

How about getting them something like this ?

    https://gadgetpro.com.au/collections/mobile-phones-for-senio…

And then you just need to get them a cheap mobile plan with international calling ?

    • Good idea - I managed to get them a GoTalk SIM (0c/min with 30c flagfall for off-peak calling and 5c/min otherwise) after having to call them to pay for a SIM because the web form doesn't work!

Still interested in any cheap VOIP providers though.

  • siptalk.com.au you might want to check out. you'll have to look up the rates yourself

    • $0.2091/min, not bad, but not that cheap :(

  • Try mytello.

    • Looks interesting! Very easy to use, thanks.

  • Telstra have the Ultimate Voice plan, we use this. All calls to landlines, mobiles are free. Calls to overseas are very cheap and being a pensioner, she gets a discount on calls.

    • Telstra have the Ultimate Voice plan

I assume it is not free ?

    Mynetfone…

    $0.039 per minute, no flagfall…

    https://mynetfone.com.au/Residential/Home-Phone/Internationa…

    whirlpool plan is free….

    https://www.mynetfone.com.au/whirlpool/VoIP/Plans/WhirlpoolS…

Just pay $15 per year for your DID number.

I have been using them for many, many years…

    • Will give em a shot, thanks!

    • I'd second the recommendation for MyNetFone though depending on the level of local and mobile calls they make they may well not need the plan below and be better going for the Whirlpool Saver plan jv recommended or the Neosaver one that includes 100 local/national calls a month and is slightly cheaper on mobiles. The 100 calls can be international to some countries though unfortunately Malta is not one of them
