Hisense 43" 43S8 4K Vs TCL 43P715 43" 4K TV

Hi everyone,

Looking for an Ozbargain opinion between these two models.

  • Used as a bedroom TV (tabletop 43", but not ruling out mounting it), spending under $600. Mostly for Android Live TV, Netflix/Plex Movies. No sports or gaming expected. Not planning on a sound bar.
  • I already have a 2020 Google TV dongle
  • I want a 4K TV essentially to avoid Plex video transcoding for 4K movies, which is why I am avoiding a 1080p TV.

Hisense 43" 43S8 Ultra HD Smart TV $495 (VideoPro)
TCL 43" 43P715 QUHD Android TV $495 (VideoPro)

I want to retain the Google TV, because I prefer upgradable modularity over inbuilt smart functions - that's why I'm willing to entertain the use of the Hisense (no Android) or even a likely outdated crap Android implementation on the TCL - because the Google TV should give me that safety net.

Given the exact same pricing as of today - and Android TV aside, can anyone convince me to lean one way or the other (or elsewhere)?

Thanks.

  • If you had ebay plus you can get the TCL down to $432.25 click and collect at The Good Guys using the PLUSDE1 code and buying gift cards at Shopback at 5% off.

    • Thanks for the heads up. I'm ex-ebay Plus but I have a $50 'come back' voucher available.

  • I don't have these exact models, but I have a Hisense TV in the lounge and use a TCL 50P8M TV as a 4k monitor. The Hisense panel is much better. My Hisense isn't an Android so I can't comment on the interfaces.

Personally, I would choose Hisense over TCL every time.

So I actually took a look at the two today. The TVs were running their demos.

The first thing I noticed was that the pixels on the TCL appeared to be more 'obvious' and distinct up close. I could quite easily make out the LCD matrix.

When I looked the same way at the Hisense, it was much harder to discern the matrix. I guess this validates the comments about the screen quality being better.

Reading through the specs, the Hisense also supports 5GHz wifi whereas the TCL only supports 2.4ghz. That won't matter to me as I plan to keep the Google TV which has 5Ghz.

Didn't test the sound or smart applications but you can't expect much from these low end sets so I didn't bother.

    • Yeah that's exactly my experience. When using the TCL as a monitor you get a flyscreen effect on some colours. It also has a BGR subpixel layout rather than RGB - which means extra stuffing around to get text looking clear.
