Just today my light in my bathroom stopped working and I uncapped the cover of the light and i found this led looking type of light.

Looks like a LED oyster light. Incidentally there should have been a plastic screw-on cap where the wires are.

Technically you'll need an electrician to replace it, as the LEDs are non-serviceable.

  • Does the switch turn on something else other than this light? Why is there a white wire twisted with red(live)?

The White and Red is to connect the live onto other lights in the room. This is normal. It saves on using a junction box in the roof cavity.

        Or to another switch.

      • Fan.

If you are renting, this type of light would be land lord responsible.

    • Not renting unfortunately, this is my parents property. I believe it used to be a circular fluorescent tube before but someone must have changed the entire thing whilst i was living out of home.

It would have been a 75w or 100w halogen pencil bulb.

I changed a heap at my place and replaced with a similar unit from AliExpress. They lasted about 5 years.

If it's not working why are the LEDs (bar one) glowing?

    • Not sure to be honest. It is still lightly glowing but not enough to light up the bathroom. Pretty much pitch black once you close the bathroom door.

    • It's stuffed.

      You can see faintly glowing.

If it was fully bright, a phone camera wouldn't take a bright photo of the surrounding area.

      • Wouldn't the camera expose for the lights thus making the surrounding area dark?

        • If the LEDs were bright.

          • @JimB: My bad. Misread wouldn't 🙂

      • What's the best course of action here? Electrician?

Personally, I'd buy a new one and change it myself. I'm not an electrician but it's easy, just turn off the mains.

Would be a 5 minute job at most.

I'm not legally allowed to change a light fitting but it's perfectly legal for me to change my own brake pads.

@JimB: I did the same thing. No past experience but there are plenty of videos on youtube on how to do this. Took me ~ 45 minutes from start to finish.

I might underestimate how stupid people can be but I think the rule is more of a 'Job Protection' for electrician.

            • @Indomietable: I suppose the laws have to cater for the lowest common denominator.

              • @JimB: You could always say you're in New Zealand, where this sort of home electrical wiring is totally allowed. Shame that we have to protect the industry here and disallow basic stuff like this from being done by homeowners.

  • Does the fan work still?

    • Yes the fan still works as normal.
