Advice Needed - Outdoor Heater for One-off Use

Hi guys,

I'm hosting a party at home at the end of May (based in Sydney). I'm hoping to have a few people (approx. 15) outside on the patio, and given it will be a bit cold, I'm planning to put some heating on the patio which is roughly 25sqm. Looks like this

I don't typically sit outside during the colder months, and I don't plan to, so don't want to get anything too expensive. This is pretty much a one-off use.

I was thinking of getting two of these

Or maybe one of these (says "Heats areas of 20m2 – 25m2").

Anyone with any thoughts on whether something like this will do the job?

Thanks!

Did you just take a photo of your family on the sofa without them knowing? :)

    • haha yeh, I figured safe to post as can barely make it out.

  • Is renting some portable gas heaters an option?

Looked into it … renting gas heater + gas tank gets close to $80-90. Then there is delivery + pickup charges which gets it close to $200. I only have a small sedan.

$30 iron fire pit from gumtree
Add as much wood as you want for one night :)

    • Won't work for this party.

  • never seen such a clean backyard. Can people wear jumpers :P?

    • haha! takes a bit of work keeping it clean. Sure they will have some warm clothing ;) but would rather have them feel comfortable.

Buy a gas patio heater off Gumtree and use your BBQ gas bottle to fuel it

    • Don’t have a gas BBQ, so don’t have a gas bottle. Also given I’ve only got a small sedan transporting a gas patio heater may become an expensive option.

    Some ideas.

I like the idea of the patio blinds and the pizza oven. Might be a bit more expensive but you extend the life on the usability of the patio in the cooler weather.

  • Sorry guys keen to get views on those electric heaters rather than other options.

Anyone with any experience on those type of electric heaters?

I have a similar space and was faced with a similar challenge

Those heater you linked I had similar ones. They made no real difference other than if standing directly in front of them all night.

I ended up hiring one of these the next time and they were great. Easily fit in my small car. Now I her these every time

Yes quite ineffective unless you stand immediately in front of it and then they just bake the top of your head. Even worse if you are taller.

    • you won't have any decent electric heater for that semi open space, a standard patio heater generate about 10kwh of heat per hour, an electric equivalent will be 4 times as much as your power socket can handle and you'll need 3 phase power to achieve that. Most electric heater of the type you want only work if you stand directly below it. Just get one with a bbq bottle and offload it on gumtree on the coldest weekend and youll be at minimal lost.

I have rented one of the shorter gas ones in the past. Pretty effective. Fitted on the back seat of a car for pickup. If you don’t have a gas bottle surely you know somebody with a BBQ that has one, maybe one of your intended guests at the party? Borrow it and offer to return it full via a swap n go ~$25 at Bunnings last time I did it.

    • The heater in your link seems to be the best option.

    • Thanks. Would 1 be sufficient or 2 of these would be required?

Looking at your space I recon you would need 2 if people will be spread out in the whole space, but also depends on how cold the weather is going to be. If in your view the temp is going to be cold then 2, if just cool then maybe just 1. I live further South so my perspective of what is cold would be different to yours ;-)

  • If you're going to go for those heaters on a stick, just go for this one:

It will work the same. 2000W is 2000W
