Home Automation Question with Kogan Downlight and Motion Sensor

Hi, recently got into home automation because of ozbargain and I would like to learn more. The folks here seem to be very knowledgeable. So here goes, I bought a few of these downlight from Kogan www.ozbargain.com.au/node/617340/

I’m wondering if there’s a way to trigger them on with some sort of motion sensor? Our exhaust fans only turns on when lights are on and since there’s no window in the bathroom, I’d like to leave the fan on even when not in use for better ventilation. The lights however I only need when I’m in the bathroom. I use google home as the main control (have a few nest minis in the house to command smart appliances) with kogan/tuya app for more detailed settings. I have seen people using Phillip HUE and the sensor, but I’m far too invested in Kogan bulbs to start over. Would be nice to get an insight so I can continue with with my home automation journey.

  • Yes, you can trigger the lights with motion sensors like this from K-Mart. I'm using something similar from eBay but it uses AAA batteries instead of button batteries. Using the SmarterHome app (which I think is a replica of Smart Life app), configure an Automation to turn the light on when motion detected and few minutes later, turn light off.

Just be aware that there is a delay before the lights is triggered. For me it is about 5 seconds.

There are also door sensors that can be used for your home automation. Similar approx 5 sec delay.

    • Thanks, didn’t know this existed. I think 5 seconds is a little too long though, I’ll keep looking but I’ll keep this one in mind.

    • yeah, with that delay, you probably end up pissing onto the toilet seat halfway before realising it.

  • Could look into one of the ikea remote controls, however you then need to do some googling on how to match the different brands (HomeKit?)

But then you'd have an easy access switch

  • +2

There is no need to be loyal when it comes to home automation. You can make them all work with each other using services like IFTT or Yonomi.

In your case though, you're better suited just getting a cheap motion sensor light bulb. It will come on instantly. I've had one in my pantry for years.

    • I am not, my bathroom uses 4 downlights, they are quite expensive elsewhere. I also need the switch to stay on for the exhaust fan to keep working.

      • Get a smart light switch flicker/toggler then.

  • The used to be cheapest option is xiaomi gateway. The best integration I found is having a raspberry pi coupling with a conbee and a couple of sensor but that will set you back about $120 at least. You can get it working with a third party sensor but it will just be clumpsy and there'll be a delay when the clouds between devices start talking to each other. The ikea bits can be cheap option but I have a couple and found their quality and performance is mediocre when integrating with other systems.

  • I'm facing the same situation.

I want to control lights from a range of things; so went homeassistant route with a usb zigbee adapter.
Using aquara motion sensors to homeassistant is instant (sub 100ms delay) after triggering the motion sensor and firing the next event.

Using a different brand for the downlight at the moment, but just ordered a few kogan downlights and will set them up using tuyalocal. I already use tuyalocal for my plug in switches for automation and power monitoring etc so adding the lights should not be an issue.

I live in the bush and net is not 100% guaranteed; so went the non-cloud options for all of the above.
