OzBargain Favourite Roadside Assist: Seeking Recommendation

Hi all,

I've been with RACQ for many years and am back in the market for a roadside assist. Wondering if there are better ones out there and I am reaching out to OZB community for a recommendation. What's your favourite roadside assist?

Heard a lot of good things about 365 Roadside Assist if anyone can share their experience. Also considering at Allianz.

Thanks in advance.

How often does your car break down?

Unless it's a free offer by the manufacturer, insurance (rac, aami), mechanic chain (ultratune, mycar), etc, then a tow truck ~$100 cash + GST. IMO, it's only viable if you're travelling far distances, unable to change tyres yourself, or have an old car that regularly has issues.

Most of the time it'll be battery, and you'll usually have signs of wear before there's an issue (unless leaving lights on, have jumper leads in your boot).

    • Uhm … considering situation with the punctured tires when wife is driving as well. And yep, mostly battery. Never had mechanical breakdown and had to call roadside assist, yet - touch wood.

      • Depending on how often it happens, you can pay an additional fee if/when it happens.

Sign up and get help now. If you don't have Roadside Assistance and decide to purchase at the time of breakdown or when you need immediate assistance, we can still help you. You need to pay an immediate service fee in addition to the product annual subscription fee. Credit or debit card required. - Source

So, the gamble is $98 immediate service charge. If nothing happens in that first year, you're already up.

        • I thought they don't do that anymore? I read sometime ago that some roadside assists don't do that.

Where is it mentioned the $98 service charge? Thanks.

She should call you for that :)

Or you could teach her how to do it?

        • I got road service in case of a puncture or damaged tyre too. But not because I couldn't change the tyre. It's because there is no spare tyre. Not even a space saver! Just a little shtty can of goo in the boot!

          • @bobbified: You the wife? 😂

            • @SF3: Does it count if I just tuck my bits in? 😋

              • @bobbified: You have to check with OP :)

                • @SF3: No thanks - I would like to keep a certain part in its "original condition" for life 🤣🤣

    • Hey Rompastompa,

just curious, what are the Signs of ware before you have issues with the car battery? Cheers

  • I'd get Onstar if they could call roadside assist for you. And if I had a car.

Free for 5 years with my car.

    • Mazda?

    • Same. Free roadside assist for 5 years along with the 5year factory warranty

  • I have 365 Roadside Assist for $98 annual fee, used twice for a dead battery and were good. Just that I had these two calls in the same week they said next time they would probably not come unless battery has been replaced.

    • I called NRMA road said assist for jump start 3 times in 5 days, they never said a thing. Very welcome everytime. $110 for a year now

  • If you drive a new car, you can probably skip it.
When you drive a car that you are likely to be the last owner, it’s worth it to get you to the mechanic when the clutch goes or similar.

  • I don’t know about RACQ, afaik NRMA you could get membership on the spot when you do need them.

    • NRMA will charge you a fee for joining on the spot.

    gotU app

    pay per use

    • how is the service ? fees ?

      • It's all up-front $ in the app, no guessing.

    • Does the gotU app still work? Mine errors "Internet connection appears to be offline."

  • Nrma membership for road side assist plus discount if you do car service plus those other members perks.

I am using Budget Direct for $67.96. They are ok for puncture tyre replacement and battery. Allianz was better but they do not include roadside assistance in comprehensive insurance.

Cancelled mine years ago. I'm not subsidising people who run out of petrol or can't change a tyre.

  • Thanks for all your response guys. I am a bit surprised to see many suggestions not to have one :-) Probably I'll leave it and sign up when I do need it.

I have always got RAC in the moment I need it. I think it's an extra $100 to use it immediately.

I am definitely up on this strategy.

  • The only thing RACQ is worthwhile for is 4 cents off fuel at Puma
