Business class sale as well

Just flew ADL-MEL on REX yesterday. Better experience than Jetstar and Tiger, very similar to Virgin in feel. Old Virgin plane, interior was still in their colours. Snack was crackers and dip, free tea or coffee. For the circa 50 bucks i paid i was really impressed.

  • Disregard, realised that Google was telling me Canberra was via Sydney

Anything for Sydney to Canberra and vice versa?

  • +1

I just booked mid Aug, Syd Melb return in Fri out Sunday, row 3 extra leg room (we know it's a virgin plane) $110 return. Thanks so much BTF for the heads up this is gold.

    • +1

Glad to help! You may even get some AFL in that weekend :)

      • That's what I'm hoping for 😉

  • +1

Thanks OP. Booked a return trip to Sydney; never flown on REX, but hopefully there are no issues.

    • What could possibly go wrong? 🙂

      • +3

Lucky this is jet and not turboprops.

        • Luckily no jets have ever crashed ;)

But seriously, air travel is statistically way safer than most other forms of transport, such as driving to/from the airport.

          • @UrMumsOnlyFan: So out of curiosity, is it the plane or the company that you think can make this go wrong?
Just not sure why you show us link to an incident with their turboprops when this deal is for their domestic route via jets, unless you think that they are using saab for domestic.

            • @h4zey: Hint - smiley faces indicate jokes, as does the phrase "But seriously".

      • What's the point of that article?????

  • Dam i already booked a trip for melb and goldcoast. These prices are all cheaper :- (

  • Is there anything for Canberra to Melbourne?

  • -4

    Rex. Don’t bother.

  • -1

    Nothing from Perth?? sigh

    • Don't they only do regional flights ex Perth? Looks like these are only their 737 domestic routes.

  • What's the refund policy on flights these days like? Haven't flown for over a year.

    • +1

Rex has a covid guarantee policy so you should be fine.

    • Tip: book both flights with the same airline.

  • Which Melbourne airport? Tullamarine or Avalon?

    • +1

      They only fly to Tullamarine

  • +5

    i'd be careful with Rex
they only have 6 x 737 planes so they are very vulnerable
i booked with rex because i needed to get back for work at a specific time, that flight was cancelled the night before (which I didn't find out until I logged in) and i couldn't even check when my flight had been moved to because their call centre closes at 9pm on sundays.
i had to sort it out at the airport and then the replacement plane i was meant to board had engineering issues so i had to be delayed another hour and a half while they found another replacement

    • Not only do they have a small fleet, but they plan to use them all daily, meaning they have zero operational spares (Qantas and virgin carry multiple daily spares in case of breakdowns etc).
If you can afford to take a bit of a gamble in terms of losing a half/entire day, probably worth trying one of these ridiculously cheap fares, but wouldn’t bank on being at your destination or home at a specific time. And when things break, as Binks90 discovered, they go very wrong due to no spares planes or parts.

      • -2

Lol based on your logic every airline in the USA would be a risk. Virgin and Qantas only have spare planes cause of Covid, not by design . I've been delayed 8 hours on Qantas due to a mechanical failure. They don't keep a fleet of spare 737s on ice in case your plane breaks down.

        • +1

not the same! qantas and virgin have such regular flights (hourly or better) that if they have to cancel your flight they can prob squeeze you onto another flight. rex doesn't have the same flexibility

        • +2

LOL the fact you are assuming they only have spare planes because of covid is laughable.

Tuttle is correct by stating that QF and VA have spare operational A/C around the network. When one breaks down, there is always a operational spare they can rob parts from if stock is not available in their inventory. Thats how the maintenance watch and supply teams work together to solve the issues as quickly as they can

        • Ahhh yes they actually do.

  • +5

I stopped booking with Rex. I don't care how cheap their tickets are.
They stopped looking after rural areas and have really cut down flights. It used to be 3 flights most days (pre-covid) to places like Grafton now it is 3 flights a week and all in the morning. You now have to stay that extra night and waste the next morning flying back rather than fly back in the afternoon you finish work.
I know several doctors who either stopped going or resorted to driving because they just dont have that extra day in the week. I would assume people doing fly in fly out would face the same dilemma. Other regional centers like Armidale is not much better.

    • I suspect that is demand based.

Many major flight paths like Syd-Melb Syd-GC have much less flight options, yet been on some which are still<50% capacity

      • +3

EVERYWHERE has less flights at the moment. And that's probably magnified in regional areas. It's not going to be financially viable to fly a 36 seat plane with 3 people in it just because they need to fly at a specific time/day.

        • Well I am not asking Rex to pull in more flights.
I am asking them to change their flights later in the week to be in the evening so fly in fly out people dont have to waste a day.
People used to fly Rex, now they had to drive because of the bad scheduling.

      • There is another dimension - Rex’s “Strong-Armed” Tactics Against Local Councils Exposed.

This is not the first time Rex has withdrawn flights as retaliation for comments made by a local councillor. The airline ended Grafton’s only air service earlier this year after a local councillor suggested Rex needed to “pull their finger out” during a debate about whether to approve the airline’s request for a rebate. Clarence Valley Council, which runs Grafton Airport, did ultimately approve a $8,908 rebate for Rex.

“Please note, however, that given the hostility of the councillors in relation to this matter, and following the call for REX to ‘pull their finger out’, REX will reject Council’s offer,” Rex national airports manager David Brooksby told Clarence Valley Council in an email in June, as reported by the ABC.

“Please also be aware that REX will cease all services to Grafton with effect 3 July 2020,” the email said.

Rex reinstated flights to Grafton in August, but only after the local Nationals MP intervened.

        It's a very interesting article.

  • Reading the reviews above, I was hoping my flight would get cancelled to get some luxury accommodation as compensation. But it turns out rex doesn't compensate you for overnight delays:

  • Sorry double post.

Cheap fares because no one fly's Rex. Loads have been absolute dismal. There is a reason for it, as people have mentioned above. Buyer beware!

    Stickin' it to qantas/virgin

      Not really.
Limited schedule, limited aircraft, limited routes. QF and VA will always win.

  • Just a heads up that Virgin are price matching through to December! I thought my Sydney to Melbourne flight for Spring Racing Carnival was cheap at $79… just cancelled and rebooked for $39.

    • How did you get Virgin to price match?

      • I meant they have released $39 flights for this route until December. Just do a flight search.

  • Thought I would give them a go a tried booking a Syd > Goldcoast return flight but the booking portal is buggy. Credit card was charged but no confirmation number and presented with a blank page.

Think I will go with Virgin instead.

    • who did you click through to? Or did you mean Jetstar themselves?

  • Be careful with this website guys. I picked the cheapest one from the search and booked ADL<->MEL last week and I hven't got the ticket for the flight I leave tomorrow so I contacted them and they say I have to pay $42 more as the price increased. Why did they not inform this earlier before I ask? Check below response from them.
