Card department of CBA has been doing quite a good job with their products. This Commbank Rewards is really up to Amex one and the best and only one banks that have it for Debit Card. Not sure if other banks will up their game or still being conservative and not wanting to change.

CBA Ultimate Award card is also quite good product with fee waiver, cashback rate, no foreign exchange fee and Travel Insurance covered. Their card department must have a management change since 2 years ago when they push for these offer for their cards product.

    • Yup agreed. They have had quite a few good hits lately.

    • traditionally CBA don't need fees as their foreign exchange rates are so atrocious you are already paying more than other cards that charge fees. Has this changed with Ultimate Award card?

      • +1

what are you on about? You surely have no idea how the rate works on Visa/Mastercard. The rate is set by Visa/Mastercard so it is the same for all the banks and banks charge extra 2.5% - 3.5% on top. That is listed as foreign exchange fee. on your card fees&charges.

Many banks even apply this charge for oversea merchant even if you paid in AUD. This is not to mention about the scam DCC (Dynamic Currency Conversion 5%) rom Mastercard/Visa. So if you ever travel and use your card oversea, NEVER accept to pay in AUD, only pay in local currency unless you want to be ripped off by 8%+

Some cards product don't have charge this fee but they don't have rewards points. Some give you more points but with rip-off fx fee 3%+

You can check ozbargain wiki for the list of cards that doesn't charge this. The best one should be Coles one and this Ultimate Award card which even give 3pts/$ spend oversea with no fx fee.

        • Thanks good info. My bad. I thought the conversions were by the bank. Good to know there shitty conversion rates don't apply on credit cards

          • +1

@gromit: Mastercard recently changed how they apply the rate on the day of transaction instead of the day transaction posted on the account but it seems only apply for debit card not credit card. So the rate you see still may not be the final rate since transaction usually takes 2-5days to settle on your account and they use the rate of that day instead of the date you purchase. So even if you check for the best rate day to use the card it still may not work in your favour.

    • Westpac also have rewards like this attached to their cards. Came out way before Commbank got on board. Both are following Amex I guess.

      • What card? Credit card? I have Westpac debit card and I have nothing. CBA Rewards is available for Debit card.

        • I think it was credit card - was a while ago that I used it.

          • @blueyez: With Debit card Westpac only give those rubbish advertisement, not really an offer like 20% off some stores, Circle.Life mobile… It is purely ads and even worse than CashRewards/Shopback promo.

So CBA is still the leading one, they made these deals available for Debit card which is pretty much for everyone. You now don't need to get credit card to have Rewards cashback offer.

Westpac Rewards on credit card is just trying to copy Amex but it is nowhere as good considering the earn rate, annual fee, perks included. Even the Rewards deal and the frequency is not as good as Amex.

  • Mine is $5 off $100

  • Don't recall ever getting an offer. Got a platinum visa but looking at the link, it seems to be a m/c offer

  • Mine is $5 off $100 too, this seems like the more common option from other comments.

T&Cs say gift card purchases are not eligible, I just bought $100 Home GC from Coles, see if it works.

    • Keep us updated mate. Was successful last time with myer offer.

      • +2

I got my $30 cashback approved today. I bought 2x Visa Giftcard $100 each + $5.95 activation fee, so basically $18 cashback for $200 Visa Gift card that I can potentially buy discounted store GC with, e.g. Cashreward $10 bonus for buying $30 Choice GC.

It works mate. Got a notification in cba app today saying the $5 cash back is on its way!

    • It does. I have used it a few times with Kogan and JB hi-Fi

  • um….mine is $10 off $200, ignore it!

  • I didnt get one.

Is the phone app the only way to see it?

get $5 off $100, better than nothing, CBA dont know what you bought, so gift card should be ok, same as Amex offers.

  • How long does it take for the credit to post in the account? I used an offer over 2 weeks ago and its shows under recently expired but still no credit. Do they really mean 14 business days as in almost 3 weeks?

    • mine normally 3-4 days, I have offers showed expired then late moved to used, because I used on last day.
